Just one week before the election , President Donald Trump ' s website was briefly defaced by crypto scammers . Among the insider information reportedly on offer was evidence discrediting Trump as president and connecting his government to “the origin of the coronavirus.”

On Tuesday night, hackers took over the website of the American president's election campaign. The background was apparently an attempt to promote a crypto scam.

Last night, shortly after midnight, the about page of the campaign website briefly read: “This page has been confiscated. The world has had enough of the fake news that President Donald J. Trump spreads every day. ”A short time later, the website apparently looked the same as before.

Vulnerability still unclear

It is still unclear how the hackers gained access to it. The hackers claimed they had access to information that would prove the Trump administration was involved in creating the coronavirus. In addition, Trump is working with foreign actors to manipulate the election. The message also linked to two Monero addresses and asked visitors to the site to deposit money into one of the two wallets, depending on the desired outcome of the story: one to keep the information secret, the other to publish it. After a deadline that has not been set, the amount of the deposited amounts should then determine whether the information was made public or not.

No evidence

There are no indications that the hackers really had access to sensitive information or to other data such as donor data. According to Techcrunch , campaign communications director Tim Maurtaugh confirmed the hack shortly afterwards, saying that no sensitive data had leaked to the public. The case is already in the hands of law enforcement agencies.

How to rate other crypto scams

So-called crypto scams, in which people are asked via platforms with high visibility to send money to a mysterious wallet for certain purposes, are a widespread form of online fraud. A similar case in connection with Twitter accounts of well-known personalities became known in June of this year. According to the current state of knowledge, the campaign website hack is to be rated similarly.

There are no indications that the attack was in any way sponsored by the state. Campaign and other election-related websites are valuable targets for hackers because they are associated with the government but are not as secure as official websites such as whitehouse.gov. The hackers' linguistic expression suggests that they are not native English speakers.
