No one was ready when it came to confinement in mid-March. Yet at least for the first few weeks, the streets of downtown Lille were deserted, as were the roads. But this Friday, it was quite different. Admittedly, it was not the crowds on the big days and nothing compared to the day before, when it felt like the whole city was out to enjoy the last day of freedom.

More people on the roads and in the city

The first difference could be felt in the morning, on the roads to reach the city center of Lille. There was a lot more traffic than last March and not just trucks.

If the morning looked like any other bad weather Sunday, we started to see more people hanging out around midday. This time, the face-to-face workers did not have to travel miles to find food. Traders presumably learned from the first lockdown and many were already ready on that first day to sell take-out food.

The strangest thing was still being able to walk around the shelves of a large multimedia store as if containment did not exist. As the line of customers stretched out onto the street the day before, there was no one there this Friday.
