His main opponents, former President Henri Konan Bédié and former Prime Minister Pascal Affi N'Guessan, had called on their supporters to abandon the ballot box and dispute the legitimacy of this third term. According to their respective parties, entire regions of the country did not vote.

While the number of consecutive presidential terms has so far been limited to two, the Head of State believes that the new Constitution adopted in 2016 allowed him to stand as a candidate for a third term, which his opponents dispute.

In 2010, the announcement of Alassane Ouattara's victory, rejected by outgoing President Laurent Gbagbo, triggered a civil war lasting several months. Ouattara had come to power after the victory of his forces in 2011. The conflict had left some 3,000 dead.

The Carter Foundation, which oversaw the election on Saturday, estimated that the political and security conditions did not allow the organization of a credible election.

"The electoral process excluded a large number of Ivorian political forces and was boycotted by part of the population in a volatile security environment," the foundation said in a statement.

Abidjan, the economic capital of the country, was calm during the election and in the days following the poll.

Violence broke out in other parts of the country, however, killing at least five people.

Under Ouattara, Côte d'Ivoire rebuilt its economy through investments in agriculture and infrastructure. The gross domestic product growth rate averaged over 8% under his two terms, before the coronavirus pandemic.
