According to Macron, the general exit restrictions should end on December 15 if the number of infections continues to fall. They should then be replaced by a curfew between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, people should be able to move freely. "We survived the worst," explained Macron. "The climax of the second wave is over." The efforts to contain the coronavirus have paid off - but they must now be continued. "We have to do everything we can to avoid a third wave and a new curfew," stressed the president.

Since the imposition of the new lockdown three and a half weeks ago, the number of infections in France had slowed significantly. At the beginning of the week, the number of new infections registered had fallen below the 5000 mark within 24 hours for the first time since the end of September, which Macron had set as a target four weeks ago. The number of corona deaths has meanwhile exceeded the 50,000 mark. France is one of the countries worst hit by the pandemic in Europe.
