For millions of joint homeowners in Germany, new rights and obligations will apply from Tuesday: then the reform of the Condominium Act (WEG) will largely come into force. It is intended to simplify the administration of communal property and especially modernizations. The coalition and interest groups had been wrestling for months over the first comprehensive WEG amendment. According to Federal Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD), she was "long overdue" after almost seventy years.
© David GANNON For millions of apartment owners in Germany, new rights and obligations will apply from Tuesday: Then the reform of the Apartment Ownership Act (WEG) will come into force in large parts. In particular, it is intended to simplify modernizations. The reformed law provides, for example, that owners can initiate certain construction work on their own in the future, i.e. without the consent of the co-owners - provided that they bear the costs themselves. This applies to charging stations as well as to burglar-proof windows and doors, a stair lift or Fiber optic connection. Tenants also have a general legal right to such changes at their own expense on Tuesday.
