The 59-year-old was elected to the first place in the list at the state representative assembly in Mainz with 99.7 percent of the delegate's votes, as the party announced on Saturday in the online service Twitter. The 59-year-old has been Prime Minister of the country since 2013. In Rhineland-Palatinate, a new state parliament is to be elected on March 14th.
In a survey by Südwestrundfunk in September, the CDU was clearly ahead with 34 percent. Dreyer's SPD only achieved 26 percent. The incumbent traffic light coalition made up of the SPD, FDP and the Greens had a slim majority. The two coalition partners have already chosen their top candidates. Family minister Anne Spiegel stands for the Greens, while the FDP elected deputy state chairwoman Daniela Schmitt to the top of the list.
