PARIS — When a small group of demonstrators gathered in front of City Hall last month to demand the resignation of a powerful deputy mayor, one stood out among the clutch of mostly feminist activists: Aniss Hmaïd. A 46-year-old man of Tunisian descent, Mr. Hmaïd had quietly joined the protest that day against Christophe Girard , a cultural power broker and fixture of Paris politics for a generation. The demonstrators wanted Mr. Girard gone for his longstanding support of the pedophile writer Gabriel Matzneff. But Mr. Hmaïd says he had a more personal reason to be there.

The Paris accord, agreed in 2015, committed the US and 187 other countries to keeping rising global temperatures below 2C above pre-industrial levels and attempting to limit them even more, to a 1.5C rise. The decision to withdraw - taken by President Donald Trump after he came to office in 2017 - made the US What was agreed in Paris ? Christophe Girard (PS), ex-adjoint à la Culture de la maire de Paris, est menacé d’expulsion du groupe Paris en commun. © LP / Philippe Baverel Christophe Girard (PS), former deputy for culture to the mayor of Paris, is threatened with expulsion from the Paris en commun group.

Will Christophe Girard be elected by the majority next Tuesday at the Paris Council in February or will he be “without a label”? According to several sources this Wednesday evening, there is debate among the elected Parisians and the vote promises to be less obvious than it seems. This faithful among the faithful could become persona non grata.

France's anti-terror prosecutor said on Friday it was investigating the decapitation of a man in a suburb of Paris .

A devotee who has become undesirable

But how did we come to this? Quite simply because the relations between Christophe Girard and Gabriel Matzneff, accused of rape by Vanessa Springora, when he was working for Yves Saint Laurent, aroused strong emotion in the environmentalist and even socialist ranks. So much so that he was forced to resign from his deputy post last summer. The New York Times' revelation of a relationship with a 15-year-old Tunisian boy years ago also caused further confusion. The facts had not given rise to legal proceedings because of the limitation period.

Paris in common would lose the majority

But his return last week to the district council of the 18th arrondissement and then that scheduled for Tuesday at the Paris Council triggered a new wave of indignation. An advertisement that Anne Hidalgo would do well while her name circulates insistently for a candidacy for the presidential election of 2022. A presence that could also interfere with the Council because environmentalists and feminists do not intend to remain passive. In short, the municipal majority could very easily crack.

On the other hand, if Christophe Girard were to be excluded - and become a free electron not constrained to respect the group instructions - Paris in common would lose the majority with 54 seats against… 55 for the Changer Paris group of Rachida Dati.
