The atmosphere has been very tense since Wednesday in Senegal. Following the arrest of deputy Ousmane Sonko, the main political opponent of the government in power, on his way to Dakar court to be tried in a case of rape against an employee of a massage parlor , riots broke out in the country's capital.

I extend my support and my sincere condolences

to the families of the victims ????????

My prayers are for you and Senegal ???????? ❤️

March 5, 2021 The country has been experiencing serious violence since Wednesday and the arrest of Ousmane Sonko, principal opposing President Macky Sall. At least four people died. The violence affects Dakar, the capital, as well as several cities in a country considered stable. Antonio Guterres, secretary general of the United Nations (UN), called for "avoiding escalation".

Many French brands have been attacked, France being readily considered as supporting President Sall. French schools in the country have closed, as has the Air France agency.

In comments taken up by AFP, the Minister of the Interior also explained that thanks to the current vaccination campaign against

the Covid-19 , the "prospect of reducing the curfew" is was drawing. This has worsened since January the often already precarious situation of many Senegalese.

Accusation of rape on the one hand, "attempted political elimination" on the other

Ousmane Sonko was officially arrested for disturbing public order, while he was going in procession to the court where he was summoned to respond to rape charges. They are brought against him by an employee of a beauty salon where he was going to get a massage to, he says, relieve his back pain. He denies the charges and is the subject of an "attempted liquidation for the purpose of eliminating a political opponent," denounces one of his lawyers.
