Harris Binotti, 25, is at the centre of an international manhunt after fellow Brit Gary Ferguson, 47, was killed in Rangoon.

He is believed to have fled to Thailand after a fight broke out at his flat at the weekend where he and Ferguson are reported to have been drinking together.

But incredibly Binotti, from in the Scottish Borders, has found time to update his Facebook page by uploading a more respectable profile picture.

The English teacher now appears smiling in a smart white shirt rather than pulling a crazed face with a red ribbon looped around his forehead and ears.

She had gone to the flat when he failed to return home.

Burmese officials later confirmed that Binotti left the country, now known as Myanmar, on a Thai Airways flight on Saturday night.

Interpol are now leading the hunt to find him.

Binotti was brought up in Dumfries but also has family in France.

Sami Poole, who worked with Binotti in the French Alps, said: “I can’t believe that this is happening to Harris, we worked together and shared a room while working in France.

“He was a great guy, really friendly and gentle, I would be amazed if he had hurt anyone never mind killed someone.

“Something has clearly went wrong but anyone who knows Harris will know that he is not a violent guy, there is more to this than meets the eye.”

Another friend who didn’t want to be named said: “I think that Harris has to try to get to an embassy or something and hand himself in.

“If he is in Thailand he could probably lie low and disappear for a while but it’s only going to make things worse in the long run.

“I think he needs to hand himself in and try to get this sorted out.”

Binotti, 25, had been at Horizon International School for three months while Ferguson had worked there for a year.

A spokesman for the ministry of information in Burma said Binotti left from Rangoon international airport by Thai Airways on the evening of November 5.

An elderly neighbour at the block of flats where Binotti lived said she heard two men fighting early on Saturday.

She said: “I heard their cries, saying: ‘Go, go’, but I can’t understand the rest as it was in English.

“I heard them throwing things. I think it happened around 4am. Then they became silent.”
