Under the hood of the 2020 Mini John Cooper Works GP is a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 301 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque, giving it 73 hp and 95 lb-ft more than the next most powerful Mini, the standard JCW Hardtop. The only transmission available will be an eight-speed automatic with an integrated mechanical limited-slip differential. Unlike the JCW Clubman and Countryman, which use the same engine, the JCW GP is front-wheel-drive only.

Changes made to the 2.0-liter engine include an integrated exhaust manifold, a lower 9.5:1 compression ratio (versus 10.2:1 in other models), a new intake duct, larger inlet and flow cross-sections, upgraded fuel injectors, a specific engine oil sump, a new turbocharger, and an active exhaust system with a straight pipe design. The engine also gets its own special cooling system to cope with the extra performance. Mini says that the 2020 JCW GP can sprint to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds and top out at 165 mph.

The 2020 Mini JCW GP's suspension has been tuned specifically for high performance, and its structure has been reinforced to stiffen the whole body. Compared to the standard Mini JCW, the JCW GP's suspension is 10mm lower with stiffer springs and rubber bearings, and increased camber on the front and rear wheels. A GP mode has also been added to the stability control system, limiting nanny intervention when driving enthusiastically. If you don't want any stability control, you can turn it completely off. All 2020 Mini JCW GPs come standard with lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/35/R18 performance tires and high performance brakes with ventilated four-piston fixed aluminum calipers up front and single-piston floating calipers in the rear.

Mini has changed up much of the Hardtop's exterior design for the 2020 JCW GP to improve aerodynamics. A large roof-mounted wing, front lower air intakes, and front lip spoiler reduce lift at high speeds without causing excessive drag. Wide wheel arches made of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) optimize air flow. To cut weight, the 2020 Mini JCW GP has just two seats; the interior comes standard with sport seats trimmed in Dinamica suede and leather with silver and red accents, a GP badge embossed on the headrests, red seat belts, and interior trim bearing the number of the specific vehicle you've bought. The red Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel also features a silver center marking and paddle shifters made out of 3D-printed metal. Available options include a digital gauge cluster, navigation, and a wireless charging pad.
