He suspected he was being followed by a large, grey 4-door Ford pickup. The pickup drove around Mercado’s car and blocked the road. According to the affidavit, the truck’s driver, later identified as 24-year-old Kevin Ramirez, stepped out of his vehicle, descended on the Lancer and began attacking Mercado while he was still at the wheel.

The reports say Mercado managed to crawl out the passenger side door but was met by Ramirez again. A woman, later identified by authorities as Isabella Vivian Perez, hopped out of the truck’s front passenger seat and joined Ramirez in the assault, the affidavit says. When Mercado began to fight back against the pair, the affidavit says, Ramirez reached toward his lower back and asked, “Do you want to get shot today?”

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Andrade jumped into Mercado’s Mitsubishi and sped off. Also inside the car? A silent passenger. Mercado’s cell phone. Ramirez and Perez fled in the truck, the report says.

The entire terrifying encounter was captured by a nearby surveillance camera.

Just 14 minutes later, Mercado helped detectives home in on his car using his phone’s GPS transmitter, the affidavit says. At a Circle-K near the intersection of W. Hillsborough Ave. and Elliot Drive, authorities spotted Andrade in the stolen Mitsubishi Lancer. He fled on foot and officers caught up with him just a quarter-mile away in the backyard of a home on Oslin Street, the affidavit says.
