Auto Shows Mercedes: Black F1 paint has "no effect" on the cooling
Andreas Seidl: "No doubt" about the legality of Mercedes' DAS system
© LAT Zak Brown and Andreas Seidl: McLaren has no doubts about the Mercedes-DAS "There is something new that should be prohibited." The Formula 1 teams sometimes seem to work according to this motto. Every major innovation is first put to the test by asking a racing team at the FIA. This also applies to the two-axis steering (DAS) , which Mercedes presented in the winter tests.
For this Formula 1 season, Mercedesdecided and wants to set an example against racism. But sporting is not just about the look. Speculations grew that the new paintwork could negatively affect the cooling of the 2020 car.
But according to chief strategist James Vowles, the team found no evidence of this during the opening weekend in Spielberg. "It has no influence," Vowles confirms in thedebriefing of the Grands Prix and explains: "There is a silver, heat-resistant coating on the inside of the engine cover."

This is there regardless of the exterior color - and it apparently fulfills its purpose. "We can see no difference in our cooler temperatures or other temperatures of core systems in the car due to the color of the exterior paint," says the head of strategy.
There is a bit more reflection, "which should actually be present with a lighter color," says Vowles. "But in reality, it has negligible or no effect on our system temperatures." But it was probably not 100% sure before the first race weekend in black.
Team boss Toto Wolff admitted in advance that the effects of the striking new paintwork were "somewhat unknown" for Mercedes. At the same time, he emphasized: "In the end, the messages and the marketing are very important, but if the performance is impaired, that's obviously not great."
Mercedes launched the look in the week before the first race and thus took a completely new path after being on the move in silver since the factory team returned to Formula 1 2010. Lewis Hamilton's commitment to racism played a key role in the choice of colors.
