For this Formula 1 season, Mercedes opted for a black paint on its W11 decided and wants to set an example against racism. But sporting is not just about the look. Speculations grew that the new paintwork could negatively affect the cooling of the 2020 car.

But according to chief strategist James Vowles, the team found no evidence of this during the opening weekend in Spielberg. "It has no influence," Vowles confirms in the Mercedes debriefing of the Grands Prix and explains: "There is a silver, heat-resistant coating on the inside of the engine cover."

There is a bit more reflection, "which should actually be present with a lighter color," says Vowles. "But in reality, it has negligible or no effect on our system temperatures." But it was probably not 100% sure before the first race weekend in black.

Team boss Toto Wolff admitted in advance that the effects of the striking new paintwork were "somewhat unknown" for Mercedes. At the same time, he emphasized: "In the end, the messages and the marketing are very important, but if the performance is impaired, that's obviously not great."
