The German has already revealed that Nico Hülkenberg is talking to two Formula 1 teams about an regular cockpit for the season 2021. Now, for the first time, he is specifically confirming that this is, among others, Alfa Romeo and that he could imagine driving for the former Sauber team again next year.

"Yes, that's the short answer," he confirms to on the 'F1 Nation' podcast. Talks with team boss Frederic Vasseur have taken place regularly over the past few months. And even if Alfa Romeo is mostly at the bottom of the field this year, the German is considering a Formula 1 comeback for the racing team.

Alfa Romeo was expected to revive the legendary GTV nameplate with a sports coupe that would deliver a seductive design and sublime driving characteristics, but the company is reportedly scrapping that plan—or at least indefinitely postponing it.

"I would like to drive in Formula 1 again. I still love it here, it's my passion," he emphasizes. "I'm not desperate, but I would love to come back and drive again."

For Hülkenberg, Alfa Romeo would in a way come full circle. As early as 2013 he was on the road for the Swiss racing team - at that time still under the name Sauber. He also has good connections to team boss Vasseur: In 2009 he became champion in the GP2 series with Vasseur's ART racing team.

But Hülkenberg knows: "For a deal many factors have to come together." Ferrari is allowed to occupy one of the team's cockpits - Antonio Giovinazzi currently holds this position. Kimi Räikkönen will sit in the other in 2020, but the future of the "Iceman" is currently unclear. It is questionable whether he would like to continue taking the back seats - as is the fact whether he will even get a new contract.

Vasseur still waves it away. "To be honest, it's still a bit early for us," he tells on the 'Beyond the Grid' podcast. "I have to discuss this with my shareholders and also know what Kimi wants to do. So far I don't want to disturb the team. It would be the worst scenario to have these discussions now."

Because Alfa Romeo currently wants to focus on the sporty, where it has not gone well so far. The two cars regularly occupy the last row on the grid and places outside the top 10 in the race. The only two points come from the crazy opening race in Spielberg, when only eleven cars crossed the finish line.

"We have to recover from this because we want to be attractive to drivers. I am not sure that we can convince anyone if we have problems," said Vasseur. "First we have to recover, then we can convince drivers to come to us."
