"We think that they are discriminatory, foreign manufacturers should be disadvantaged to US producers," said the spokeswoman for the European Commission , Miriam Garcia Ferrer, on Thursday in Brussels. "Of course, that would mean that the WTO would be incompatible," she added to the rules of the world trade organization (WTO).

The tax reliefs are part of the $ 430 billion climate, social and tax packages, which the Senate passed with a short majority a few days ago. Buyers of emission -free electric vehicles should in future be able to assert tax credits worth several thousand dollars. However, the prerequisite is that the farmers are no longer dependent on China on electric cars, but invest in the production of batteries on site.

Garcia Ferrer said the EU agree with Washington in the fact that tax credits are an important incentive to boost demand for electric vehicles. "But we have to make sure that the measures introduced are fair and not discriminatory," she said. "We therefore continue to ask the United States to remove these discriminatory elements from the draft law and ensure that it is fully compatible with the WTO."

A group of large automobile manufacturers had previously criticized that most electric car models were not in question for tax credits. The reason: the batteries and critical minerals would have to come from the USA.
