Your car insurance bill may feel like it's random, but there is math behind it. Here is how car insurance rates are calculated. How is my car insurance rate set? When you submit an application for car insurance, you are sorted first into an individualized group > 382 Cities Ranked for Car Thefts .

Newly licensed drivers are expensive to insure. They are inexperienced, naturally, and have a high rate of accidents. Auto insurance companies view that as risky. Hence, they charge new, teen drivers much higher rates.

Installing an anti-theft device will result in a car insurance discount, but the price break is typically on the comprehensive portion of your premium only. Comprehensive is a relatively small part of most drivers' premiums, and pays out up to the actual cash value of your car if it's stolen. This optional coverage comes with a deductible, your portion you pay on a claim before insurance kicks in. The average annual rate for comprehensive  is $192, according to a rate analysis by Insurance.com. That's not much to pay to ensure you get the actual cash value (ACV) for your car, minus the deductible, if your car is stolen.

This means more dated cars are tooling around in cities and on country roads throughout the nation.

This year alone, 382 cars have been reported stolen in Davenport. That's more than one a day. When WQAD News 8 simulated the common practice of leaving your car running while you run into the store, we found just how quickly someone can drive off with your car . It took less than 12 seconds for our

Drivers are often confused about how comprehensive coverage works, according to a survey of 1,000 drivers commissioned by Insurance.com. Sixty-three percent of those surveyed incorrectly said comprehensive covers hitting another car. Damage you cause to another driver's car is covered by your liability property damage insurance, while damage to your own car is covered by collision insurance. And 56% incorrectly said comprehensive covers injuries you cause in an accident, which is covered by the personal injury liability insurance portion of your policy.
