We've Weighed the Pros and Cons of Leasing vs. Buying a Car Let's break it down.

Everything can be leased. It costs about $67 million to buy a new Gulfstream G650, but you can lease one through FlexJets for only around $17 million with actual flying hours at about $5000 each beyond that. Computers, office furniture, intermodal shipping containers… just about anything and everything.

The bottom line on all leases is that they should be negotiated in full knowledge of your financial situation. Because the reason for preferring a lease over a purchase is about money. And money matters whether you’re shopping at the top or the bottom of any market.

There’s no substitute for the hard work of research when it comes to getting the best deal. This is the start of your research. Not the end.

Leasing Isn’t For Everyone

Leasing works best for people with predictable, stable lives. Accountants, actuaries and government workers buried so deep in the bureaucracy they can’t come up to the sunlight without getting the bends. They know how many miles they’ll drive over any period of time because they’ve got a routine and will stick to it no matter what. If there are any tax advantages to leasing for their life situation, they know it. Don’t lease if you’re the type of person who occasionally does stints in prison, can’t hold a job, and own several large dogs with an appetite for upholstery. And structuring a lease to your particular advantage means negotiating.

How to Negotiate Your Next Car Lease Like a Pro

How to Negotiate Your Next Car Lease Like a Pro A handy guide and checklist to follow to get the absolute best deal when leasing a new car, truck, or SUV. We’ll avoid debating the overall desirability of leasing versus buying in this article, instead assuming that a two- or three-year lease term is a given and focusing on getting on a lease that is as financially advantageous as it can be. Indeed, a rational, step-by-step approach to vehicle leasing is fairly rare in the typical dealership, but talking with veteran car dealers proved that it’s even rarer than we thought.

Finding the best lease deal in these competitive environments means doing your research. There's no substitute for that hard work when it comes to getting So Ford is backing lease deals on 2019 model Escapes that have been in dealer inventory for more than 60 days. The cost of a lease is rather straightforward. You (the lessee) pay for the depreciation of the vehicle over the lease term and the cost of the money the lessor is using to purchase the vehicle, plus fees such as security deposits, acquisition fees, disposition charges, and anything else the creative accountants can come up with. Basically, you pay some of the capital costs and fees up front in the form of your initial payment and then a monthly charge that varies with expense and depreciation.

Usually this is solely a survey of manufacturer web sites. But this month finding lease deals on exotics like Rolls-Royces and Lamborghinis means surveying dealer web sites. Rolls-Royce would never be so crass as to talk about money, but its dealers have to.

Okay, this isn’t a comprehensive round-up and most manufacturer deals are regional ones—what’s offered in Tallahassee may not be the same as the deal on offer in Philadelphia or Austin. To keep this manageable, we looked at factory deals on entry-level sedans in four regions; Southern California, Chicagoland, New York City, and C/D’s hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan. It’s a useful look at what’s out there, but what’s available near anyone who doesn’t live in these zip codes will differ.

Should You Lease or Buy Your Next Car?

Should You Lease or Buy Your Next Car? These are the main factors to consider when weighing the decision whether to lease or to buy. We present five reasons why you should lease, and four to buy. We received some tips from Daniel Blinn, a Connecticut attorney who specializes in automotive financing and other consumer issues. He offered a list of considerations based on what most automakers and dealers offer—and what elements are baked in to what they offer—when you shop for a purchase or a lease. Consider these as guidelines, not hard and fast rules.

Of note for November , the 2019 Volkswagen e-Golf Electric and Volkswagen Atlas offer excellent value. The worst lease deals are on the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle, you'll want to stay away from those. Here are the maximum customer cash-back rebates available nationwide along with the best lease

As to the Rolls-Royces and Lamborghinis? We’re featuring what we could find.

Rolls-Royce

Hey there Big Shot, want to profile in a Roller without putting out $300,000 or more? Then leasing is your path to big balling. But it still isn’t cheap.

How about a Cullinan from Los Gatos Luxury Cars, outside of Silicon Valley? The advertised deal is $3799 per month after $39,500 at signing on a 48-month lease. That 48 months may seem long, but it only includes 5000 miles per year—418 per month—and anything over that costs $2.50 per mile. So if you put as many miles on your Cullinan as most leases allow, you’ll be on the hook for another $70,000 or so when it comes time to turn that big box in.

What’s even more staggering is how incredibly restrictive these leases are. Rolls-Royce of Palm Beach in Florida stands ready to lease you a 2018 Ghost Sedan at only $2975 per month after $50,000 at signing on a 48-month lease. But that only buys you 2500 miles per year.

That’s a lease that only covers 208 miles of driving every month. That’s like, one trip back and forth between your estate in Beverly Hills and the beach house on Padaro Lane just south of Montecito. You know the one somewhere between Conan O’Brien’s, Ellen Degeneres’ and Ashton Kutcher’s places? Yeah that one. Do the math, and if you use all 10,000 miles it works out to a blistering $19.02 for each.

Advertising Versus Actual Inventory require(["medianetNativeAdOnArticle"], function (medianetNativeAdOnArticle) { medianetNativeAdOnArticle.getMedianetNativeAds(true); }); Manufacturers advertise national lease specials all the time. A $399-per-month rate (the average of all car leases) draws 3-series buyers in like the tide. What about that Civic for only $99 per month and $2999 down? It’s all possible, at least in theory.

Midsize trucks don’t mean only midsize deals . Automakers are running full throttle on deep discounts this month with double-digit percentages off MSRP on models including the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. Trucks.com compiled a list of deals that represent the best value for consumers.

If you have the wealth to afford a Rolls-Royce, you also likely have lawyers, accountants, and money managers who will talk you out of insane indulgences like a $2999 per month, 48-month lease for a 2019 Dawn convertible after $24,487 at signing that only covers 2500 miles per year.

The advice here, writing strictly as a non-lawyers, non-accountants, and financial ignoramuses, is that if you can’t walk into a Rolls-Royce dealership and buy one using Apple Pay on your iPhone, don’t get a Rolls-Royce.

Lamborghini

Pretty much everything about Rolls-Royce leases applies to those for Lamborghinis. Like if you’re daunted by the prospect of paying $3498 per month on a three-year lease after $25,789 at signing, don’t walk into Lamborghini North Los Angeles asking to look at the entry level 2020 Huracan Evo. Oh yeah, that’s three years, but only 7500 miles with additional miles at $2.50 per. The initial math works out to $19.78 per mile, though, so the overage is a relative bargain.

That was fun. Now back to reality.

Cheap Leases All Over the Place

Having resigned yourself to snagging neither a Rolls-Royce nor a Lamborghini, how about something truly cheap. Dirt cheap.

Hyundai will lease you an Ioniq Electric for three years and 30,000 miles for only $79 per month after $999 down. That’s a miserly 13 cents per mile. The catch here is that this deal is restricted to the New York City area. Most other areas can get the same vehicle for $109 per month after $2500 at signing on similar terms.

Here's how to take over an auto lease

Here's how to take over an auto lease Here’s how to get a lease takeover and some things to consider before you do. What is a lease takeoverA lease takeover is an agreement in which you assume someone else’s lease. This is a formal transfer that requires the leasing company to approve your credit. Once you’re approved, the lease is transferred into your name, and the car is your responsibility for the remainder of the lease. There are times, however, when the original lessee isn’t entirely removed from the lease.

This November , Audi's lease deals are for its 2019 lineup of luxury cars and SUVs. There are no advertised leases for any 2020 Audi models. Then, use the U.S. News Best Price Program to find the best local prices from dealers in your area. Also, you can cross-shop car deals just as you would

Remember, lease deals can vary from region to region. Be sure to do your homework online with our help and guidance, and then visit a local dealership to see what offers are available near you. Keep in mind the very best deals also hinge upon the car shopper having excellent credit.

That’s 13 cents per mile, or a mere 1/152nd the cost of that Huracan lease.

If the Ioniq electric drivetrain is too, well, virtuous for you, head over to Kia where you can burn gasoline while still indulging your stinginess in a 2020 Kia Rio LXS for $139 per month for three years and 36,000 miles after only $2484 at signing. Again, that’s for the New York City area, but the deals Kia offers in the rest of the country are similar.

You don’t want to put out any cash at signing? Head over to the VW store where they’re featuring several $0-at-signing lease deals on Jettas, Golfs, and the like. The best one we found this month is a $239 per month, 39 month, 32,500-mile lease on a 2019 Jetta S with the automatic transmission. Again, it’s a deal specific to New York City, but similar deals are available around the country.

Have your heart set on a Porsche? The cheapest lease on a new Porsche we could find is $749 per month on the Macan. That’s after $5009 at signing and includes 30,000 miles. This is through Porsche Financial Services, so you’ll have to ask your local dealer for the specifics in your zip code.

Any other month, that Macan lease would seem ludicrously expensive. But have you seen what it costs to lease a Rolls-Royce or a Lamborghini?
