The big reveal offirst foray into the cruiser segment in 15 years . But the official press launch of the R 18? That didn’t unfold until last week, when BMW corporate pulled back the curtain to give us some more juicy info on the development and design of what’s one of the firm’s biggest intros in some time. In his , EOC Morgan Gales went over his first impressions of the Bavarian bombshell while testing it on the road, so here, we’ll cover some of the other details that emerged from BMW’s press launch of the R 18 just last week.

Next up is the Premium Package, which adds an Adaptive Headlight, Headlight Pro (an additional lighting element), Hill Start Control, and Reverse Assist on top of the standard model, for an additional $1,450.
The Select Package includes a locking fuel filler cap, heated grips, and an anti-theft alarm system, for $775 more than the base model. The other packages will come online sometime later in fall of 2021.

During the press event, someone inevitably brought up BMW’s last attempt at a, the , to which Heinrich said, “I would say we did not really go into the cruiser market.” He chose to describe the R1200C more as a handsome, somewhat cruiser-styled ; functionally it worked, but aesthetically and emotionally? Not so much.
The R nineT Had A Hand In It
Although it definitely didn’t inspire the overall aesthetic, theshould get at least some credit for the R 18′s existence. According to Roland Stocker, project lead for the R 18, “Without the R nineT, there would be no R 18. It was our door opener.” He went on to say that the model made a strong argument for an emotional, heritage-inspired motorcycle to the bean counters while providing the needed template for production.

The new BMW R 18 definitely goes for an elemental cruiser vibe, purposely avoiding things like electronic adjustment options. Instead you see a nonadjustable 49mm telescopic fork and a preload-adjustable horizontally mounted shock (with no linkage)
directly connecting the top of the swingarm to the main frame and bringing just 3.5 inches of suspension travel. As in the BMW R5, the tubes of the telescopic fork are encased in fork sleeves.
It’s Designed To Be Easy To Customize
From the get-go, says BMW, the R 18 was designed with quick modifications in mind. That means an easily removable rear subframe, a saddle attached by just a single bolt, and just two bolts to get past to remove the steel rear fender (all bodywork including side panels and headlight bucket are steel). The other painted parts come off easily too, and carefully conceived attachment points for the hydraulic lines of the brake, clutch, and cable harness likewise allow easy installation of aftermarket handlebars in conjunction with matching hydraulic lines and cable harnesses. Other components too were designed to fit parts manufactured for American brands, so builders can have even more aftermarket options. In addition, the visible valve covers and the belt cover are designed to be located outside the oil chamber, making them easy to change.

The Centerpiece Is Still The 1,802cc Boxer Engine
hasn’t been shy about touting the centerpiece of its new R 18, which would be that humongous 1,802cc, newly developed two-cylinder boxer engine—the most powerful two-cylinder boxer ever used in motorcycle series production. BMW claims peak power figures of 91 hp at 4,750 rpm and 116 pound-feet at 3,000 rpm, though our own dyno runs showed somewhat less optimistic numbers—81 hp and 103 pound-feet of torque, or just slightly punchier than what H-D claims for the Milwaukee-Eight 107 on its Softail Slim. As Gales puts it, “[The R18′s engine] shakes mightily when it starts and rolls the bike to the left when you rev it up thanks to the ample flywheel effect of the longitudinally mounted crankshaft. Unlike many of BMW’s other boxer engines, there is no counterbalancer, and this engine makes it known.”
And as the product manager at BMW Motorrad USA put it, “BMW’s middle name is Motor!”
Ride By Wire And Three Ride Modes Come Standard
The R 18 comes standard with three riding modes along with ASC (Automatic Stability Control) and MSR (engine drag control), giving it an electronics combo you don’t normally see in the retro heavyweight cruiser segment. The modes are Rain, Roll, and Rock that adapt to individual rider preferences, with Rock being a bit more aggressive with throttle response and having the least intervention from traction control. Hill Start Control can also be added as a factory option.
It’s Got A Reverse
A reverse gear is available as a factory option (it’s called Reverse Assist). Reverse is driven by an intermediate gear and the starter motor, and it’s engaged manually by flipping down a lever on the left side of the bike. This blocks forward gears and engages the reverse gear, with movement initiated by the rider pressing the starter button.
There’s State-Of-The-Art LED Lighting
BMW managed to stuff some cool LED lighting tech into that classic (and adjustable) metal bucket with a newly developed, unusual-looking main light, while new LED side indicators also offer integrated taillight function at the rear for added safety.
Meanwhile, you can also spring for the Adaptive Headlight, which offers improved illumination by way of separate LED elements in the main headlight. Those elements are activated via a tilt sensor based on your lean angle and turn on to compensate for the bike’s angle in relation to the cutoff line of the low beam. The function is activated when the engine is running, the high or low beam is activated, and darkness is detected, at speeds over 6 mph and a banking angle of approximately 7 degrees. The Adaptive Headlight is a factory option.
And For The First Time, There’s An Anti-Hopping Clutch
As in most BMW Motorrad boxer engines, a single-disc dry clutch transmits the torque from the engine to the transmission. On the R 18, for the first time it’s designed to be a self-reinforcing anti-hopping clutch with a slip-assist system to prevent rear wheel hop say, under heavy deceleration.
BMW Partnered With Aftermarket Companies For A Deep Catalog Of Accessory Parts
BMW made sure the R 18 will have plenty of accessory support by leveraging its partnerships with some of the bigs in the aftermarket segment. Two different design collections of milled aluminum parts are available via a Roland Sands Design collaboration, while BMW also tapped Mustang Seats and Vance & Hines for their expertise in the saddle and exhaust areas (respectively), with several options being available from both categories.
This Could Be The Beginning Of A Family
Much like the R nineT spawned a series of several iterations, BMW has pretty much admitted the same will hold for the R 18, with new variations of the bike to come down the line. We’ve already seen a custom drag bike from Roland Sands, and a “concept” performance cruiser from BMW with the R 18 / 2. Will there be a proper bagger too? We’d bet on it.
