Lexus RX Hybrid Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Lexus RX Hybrid or Acura MDX Hybrid?

The Acura MDX Hybrid finishes just a bit behind the RX Hybrid in our luxury hybrid and electric SUV rankings. The Acura delivers superior handling and has a bit more horsepower, but the RX Hybrid is the more fuel-efficient SUV of the two. The MDX Hybrid can seat one extra person and provides more cargo space than the Lexus. Both SUVs have fairly lengthy standard features lists, though the Acura has a frustrating infotainment system. However, the Lexus is more upscale and stylish inside. There are reasons to like each of these SUVs, so choosing the right one for you comes down to personal preference.

Which Is Better: Lexus RX 450h or Lexus RX 350?

As you might guess, the Lexus RX 350 and the hybrid RX 450h are basically identical except for the powertrain each comes with. These models are similar in terms of features, passenger space, cabin quality, and cargo space. Each delivers a serene ride and offers a more-athletic F Sport trim and a long-wheelbase variant. As you'd expect, the Hybrid is more fuel-efficient, though the fuel cost savings are small, at less than $100 per year. It also costs more than the nonhybrid RX, but it's up to you to decide if those benefits are worth the extra money.

RX Hybrid Interior

How Many People Does the RX Hybrid Seat?

The base RX Hybrid seats five people in two rows, while the long-wheelbase model seats six people in three rows. The driver has limited rearward visibility because of the sloping roofline, but that's the only issue with the front seats, which are otherwise spacious and supportive. The rear seats have ample head- and legroom for adults as well. However, the third row in 450hL models is pretty cramped, and it might even be too tight for some children.

RX Hybrid and Child Car Seats

The RX Hybrid comes with two full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors for the second row of seats. The third row has tether-only connections. The second-row lower anchors are easy to connect, and accessing the tether anchors is simple.

That AWD system can send up to 50 percent of the power to the rear when needed, and when not needed, it electromagnetically decouples the prop shaft to save fuel. Lexus notes that the DTC AWD does not impede on legroom, trunk room, ride comfort, cabin quietness or vehicle agility. The new system is offered on all grades of the ES 250.All ES 350s have the company’s 3.

RX Hybrid Interior Quality

This Lexus features plenty of premium materials throughout its handsome interior. Overall, the RX Hybrid looks and feels like a luxury SUV should.

RX Hybrid Cargo Space

The RX Hybrid has a decent amount of cargo space compared to other luxury hybrid and electric SUVs, but it's below average compared to other luxury midsize SUVs. The RX Hybrid gives you 18 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and 55.9 cubic feet with them folded down. Long-wheelbase RX Hybrid L models give you 16.3 cubes behind the third-row seats.

RX Hybrid Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

Unlike previous Lexus infotainment systems that have the irritating Remote Touch controller, the new version in the RX Hybrid features a touch screen. It also adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the features list for 2020, making it easy to sync your smartphone with the vehicle.

RX Hybrid Performance

RX Hybrid Engine: Getting the Job Done

This Lexus comes with a 308-horsepower hybrid powertrain – comprised of a V6 and multiple electric motors – and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). It's not the fastest SUV in the class, but the RX Hybrid has enough power for any driving situation, and the transition between electric and gasoline power is smooth.

2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid long-term update: Efficient and easy to like

2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid long-term update: Efficient and easy to like Our Highlander is proving to be a comfortable, efficient hauler during its honeymoon period.Overall, there's a lot to like here, but the best thing about this Highlander is the frugality of the hybrid drivetrain. The EPA promises 35 miles per gallon combined for a Platinum Hybrid AWD tester like ours, and while it's still a little early to tell if that's going to be accurate over the long haul, my gut says yes. I've been getting around 34 mpg right now, with a lot of highway driving, but that's all during the initial break-in period, so there's likely more efficiency to be had.

RX Hybrid Gas Mileage: Leading the Pack

When it comes to fuel economy, most luxury midsize SUVs are well behind this Lexus. The RX Hybrid earns ratings of 31 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, while the RX Hybrid L gets 29/28 mpg city/highway.

RX Hybrid Ride and Handling: Comfort First

Ride quality is the RX Hybrid's top priority, and it delivers. It glides over bumps in the road without jostling occupants, giving the RX 450h a comfortable driving experience. Just don't expect too much sportiness. Although the RX Hybrid feels fairly poised, there's also some body roll around turns. Rivals are more athletic overall.

RX Hybrid Towing Capacity

The RX Hybrid can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The Final Call

Lexus didn't make too many changes to the RX Hybrid for the 2020 model year, but that's a good thing, since this SUV already delivers on many fronts. It's quiet and comfortable, with a luxurious interior. The RX also gets great fuel economy, and its new-for-2020 touch-screen infotainment system shores up what was arguably its biggest weakness. It's easy to see why this Lexus finishes in the top half of our class rankings.
