Ultrarare 1970 Buick GS455 Stage 1 Four-Speed Convertible Is Driven - a Lot! I knew exactly what it was: a 1970 GS Stage 1 convertible four-speed, Sherwood Green with a black bench-seat interior and black vinyl top. The drivetrain on the GS was completely numbers-matching, right down to the carburetor, distributor, and shifter. Factory options included power steering, power disc brakes, an AM radio with a rear speaker, G60-15 steel wheels with dog-dish hubcaps, A/C, tinted glass, a remote driver's mirror, and a tachometer and full-gauge instrumentation. Prior to ownership, the steel wheels were replaced with Buick Rallye wheels, and both heavy-duty suspension and tilt-wheel were added.

The GS 455 fired up and runs fine. Jason tells us the N . O . S . rear bumper that came with the GS is worth “about 0.” That means he essentially bought a bumper and got a running GS 455 tossed in for free . The N . O . S . rear bumper still wore its Buick tag. The Bug That’s Actually A Buick!

The Bug That’s Actually A Buick! Robert Freeman’s 1959 Beetle takes “buggin-out” to new heights. The diminutive 215 Buick has been a go-to engine for tight engine conversions since the 1960s. Introduced in 1961, it's light weight and 4.24-inch bore spacing combined with 3 -inch bores, making for compactness that's just part of the reason it's a popular engine swap. Only in production by Buick for three years, the rights to the design and tooling were sold to Rover in England, which kept it in production until the mid-1980s, finding its way into MGs and Land Rovers among other British marques. In 1961 it was the lightest weight, mass-produced engine made, at 315 pounds.

More than 10 years had passed since he left a note for the owner to call him if he ever wanted to sell his 1970 Buick GS 455. Fifty years old, Jason has been collecting Buick GS models since he bought his first GS, a Riviera, at 16 years of age.

"It's not even a hobby anymore. It's a lifestyle."

Ten years earlier, Jason's friend Bill called and said he had found a Buick GS close to where he worked. Jason drove 25 miles from his home in Long Island to Oyster Bay, New York, and sure enough, a 1970 Buick GS 455 with no plates was parked on a side street. The car looked abandoned.

"I knocked on the door of the house the car was sitting in front of, and an older woman came out and said that was her tenant's car. She would hand my number to her tenant."

There’s nothing else on the rear or on the body sides to indicate that this car has hybrid technology under the skin. Not even a funky color choice like bright green, chrome yellow, or electric blue. Our test car was white with chrome wheels—classy but conventional.

Jason went back several times over the next few years to make sure the owner got the note, because he didn't get a call. On one drive-by mission, he noticed the old Buick was gone.

Ten years later Jason got a call "out of the blue." He had to think for a couple minutes to recall the car because he frequently leaves notes when he is chasing old Buicks.

"He wouldn't tell me a price over the phone, so I said I would be there with my truck, trailer, and cash that weekend."

Jason found the Buick parked in a long drive, by a garage, "a few doors down" from the spot where he had found the two-door hardtop 10 years earlier.

"I'm looking at the car and he says, 'Oh, I have extra parts. '"

Jason says, "My eyes almost popped out of my head," when the seller walked out of the garage with an N.O.S. GS rear bumper with the tag still on it from Buick.

The car was rusty, but that bumper sparkled. Jason says he "really wanted that bumper." Meanwhile, the owner still would not price his Buick. He asked Jason to make an offer.

"I said, 'I'll give you 700 bucks for the car.'

He said, 'I don't know if I can take that. How about $1,200?'

I said, 'How about $900 and you throw in all the parts and the rear bumper?'

He said, 'Fine.' So I bought the car for 900 bucks."

Having purchased the Buick, Jason turned his attention to getting the car out of the driveway.

"I am looking at the driveway and I am looking at the car, and he says to me, 'You want me to back it out of the driveway for you?'

"I said, 'It runs?'

"He said, 'Oh yeah, no problem.' He started it up and backed it out and parked it in the street for me."

Jason was dumbfounded to drive the rusty-looking Buick under its own power. The quarter-panels were rusted "almost to the floor," and the roof had "a lot of surface rust." He had purchased the Buick as a parts car and thought he was going to have to drag the GS 455 into the street and onto his trailer.

"When I was looking at the car I was adding up what I could sell the hood for, and what I could sell the engine for. The car had good bones. It had a good frame, good trunk and floors. It was just too nice to part out, so I wound up doing all the mechanical work and making it into a car again."
