The second-generation Pontiac Trans Am is one of the coolest-looking American performance cars of its era, but its drivetrain is a bit dated. This no-expenses-spared pro-touring restomod solves that problem with a twin-turbo LS9 V8 and plenty of other upgrades. The best part? It's for sale right now on eBay Motors. You should buy it. Welcome to You Must Buy, our daily look at the cars you really should be buying instead of that boring commuter sedan.

Back in the 1970’s the muscle car era was all but over. With Fords Mustang, Dodge’s Challenger and a whole host of others no longer representing anything like their forefathers, the Trans Am was a last hurrah despite the imposing emissions regulations.

Look back at the specification sheet today, and you might wonder how or why such a car received the adoration that still follows it today, with the punchiest models dribbling out a paltry 220 hp. Look back at the muscle cars of only a few years previous, and you would regularly see option codes offering over twice the output.

This Is The Affordable Alternative To The Pontiac GTO

This Is The Affordable Alternative To The Pontiac GTO This Pontiac Tempest LeMans is the perfect alternative to one of the sixties most revered muscle cars The Tempest was Pontiac's first foray into the world of compact vehicles in 1960. By 1964 the second generation was due and featured the A body platform, a design that was kept in use until 1997. That’s a whole seven decades after it was first introduced. You read that correctly. Although a particularly detailed point that may appear unimportant, it was this platform that was the basis for one of the muscle car legends of the sixties, the GTO.

The model featured here might not be the instantly recognisable model from Smokey and the Bandit, but it is the one that led to its creation; the Black Special Edition. That said, it still has its original T-Tops fitted, which are arguably one of the coolest things you can have on a car this side of pop up headlights.

This 1976 Trans Am Black Special Edition is just one of 110 made with the configuration seen here. With a 455 ci mated to a four speed transmission, this was the last model to feature this engine before it’s inevitable retirement. As if this wasn’t a good enough reason to get out the cheque book, this one boasts just 17,000 original miles.

Boasting enough performance knowledge to reinstate the power lost due to growing emissions equipment on the factory cars, they began adding turbochargers and, by the next year, had evolved to completely rebuilding the powertrain.
