Rare Finds: Barn-find Mustang fastback purchase interrupted by thieves results in a handshake deal

Thad Landaiche couldn't believe his luck when he found a 1966 K-code Mustang fastback. However, on his way to get the car, his luck would change—somebody stole his F-250 Ford diesel truck, car trailer, and even the Ben Franklins stowed inside his suitcase to buy the barn find.

Real, Unrestored, and Rare 1967 Ford Mustang GTA

Real, Unrestored, and Rare 1967 Ford Mustang GTA It’s a one-of-one optioned vehicle to boot. You read that right. This is a one-of-one 1967 Ford Mustang GTA convertible with the Marti report to back it up. It’s a super rare find and is currently for sale through Shelton Classics in North Carolina for $34,995. It has just 2,182 original miles on the odometer, which means this unique example has its entire life ahead of it. Although most of the first-gen Mustangs featured most of the same design elements, each year received some slight upgrades.

The finds keep on coming in Midland, Texas, in this week's episode of Barn Find Hunter. A lunch conversation with a local man leads Tom to Jeff Roland, who

There is no engine, no transmission, and the 9-inch rearend housing has been changed to an 8-inch. The front-end sway bar is smaller. The body has some rust, but the framerails are good.

Thad lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His Mustang K-code adventure began a month earlier when he drove 460 miles to the Texas Motor Speedway for the Pate Swap Meet, where he met Alan Piper. Piper told Thad he was ready to sell a 1966 K-GT fastback and a 1964 convertible, which had been stored for 30 years. Thad and his buddies followed Piper's directions to Terrell, Texas: "Down a service road, onto a gravel road, you will see a cattle gate; drive through the cattle gate, and the first 18-wheeler trailer with no doors has the Mustangs inside."

"We climbed up into the trailer. Bees were flying all around. Car parts were piled on top and all around the cars," Thad recalls.

On this first inspection, they had permission to view the Mustang, but the owner could not be there. They could not find a VIN under the hood and Thad realized at that time that the door had been changed from another Mustang, so there wasn't a door trim tag to source. The car was very difficult to access inside the trailer, especially since it was so dark and bees were thick in the air, so Thad and his friends drove back home to Baton Rouge.

Later, Thad phoned owner Alan Piper, who said, "No, it's a true K-code. I have the title." Of course, the 289 Hi-Po engine and transmission were long gone. About a month later, on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend 2019, Thad recalls, "We woke up early and left Baton Rouge at 6:30 a.m., on what was a safe trip, going good"—until they pulled into the TA Truck Stop at the I-20 exit in Terrell, Texas.

"As we walked into Subway, I asked Darren what time it was; he said 11:58 a.m. There was no line, so we got our food right away. I went to sit down to eat and I looked outside to check on my truck and trailer, as I usually do, but this time my truck and trailer were gone. I ran outside, looking around. It was a nightmare. I thought I was dreaming."

Immediately, Thad called Darren, still inside the Subway. Darren ran outside and the two looked around the truck stop, but no pickup or trailer. Thad dialed the police and they wrote a report. Then, Thad called Alan Piper. Piper drove to the truck stop—he only lived a mile and a half away. Sympathetic to their plight, Piper said, "I'll take you as far as you want to go."

They started driving east to Baton Rouge. Piper pulled off at several exits, figuring the crooks might have dumped the trailer, but nope, not there. Thad called his wife, who was in Alexandria, Louisiana, 270 miles east. Piper kept driving east, and Thad's wife kept driving west. They met midway in Shreveport. Thad got home at 8:30 p.m. that night.

Recently we had the opportunity to travel through the same area and contacted the family to see if they still had the car. Upon our arrival, they were more than happy to give a tour of the barns . Other than a few small changes, not much it changed. The Charger and van had not moved from their respective

On Memorial Day morning, Thad got a call from a lady that saw the phone number of "Landaiche Cabinets" on the side of a trailer parked at another truck stop. Her husband wanted to buy the damaged (jackknifed) trailer at a good price. Thad informed the lady that the trailer had been stolen. Thad called the Terrell police to inform them where the trailer was. Piper did Thad another favor by picking up his trailer and brought it back to his house. Four days later, police found Thad's 2001 Ford F-250.

Thad flew to Dallas and drove to the impound yard to see his truck; he says the crooks "cleaned it out, all the way down to paper clips, windshield busted, back bumper and bedside wrinkled, toolbox gone, back tires roasted down to the steel belts, needles (for drugs) in the back of the truck." Thad bought new tires, an ignition switch, and a new windshield in Dallas in order to drive the F-250 and trailer back home.

Before leaving Dallas, Thad and his friend Mark (a longtime Mustang buddy) began the process of going after the K-code Mustang. On this trip, he and Mark brought tools to pull the fender back to see the VIN. Getting the car out of the elevated trailer, Piper dug a hole to lower the trailer's rear tires. There was still "a good 10 inches" to drop the car onto Thad's trailer, facilitated with chains and a front-end loader. As the car came out, the bees in the trunk got angry and attacked, and everybody started running. When the bees calmed down, Thad pulled the trailer over by Piper's house, several hundred yards away.

Barn Find 1929 Packard 640 Phaeton

Barn Find 1929 Packard 640 Phaeton This rare classic has been well-preserved over time. It’s always fun to read about car barn finds, but they usually don’t involve something like this 1929 Packard 640 Phaeton. That’s because this classic American beauty isn’t common by any stretch of the definition. Even better, the car is complete, so you won’t need to track down almost impossible parts or figure out how to have replacement components fabricated. As you can see in the photos, this Packard still has key features like the front windshield and a single windshield for one of the backseat occupants.

"He had the title. We got the fender pulled back. Sure enough, there was the K-code."

Resting in the East Texas heat, under the only shade tree in the area, Piper asked Thad what he wanted to do. Thad explained he didn't have the money now to buy the car. He could leave the car there and "come back one day and pay you." Piper had once lived in Baton Rouge and knew people that were friends with Thad, one in particular, a man named Skipper, had bought a 1941 Packard from Thad 27 years ago. Piper said, "I know you got a lot going on. I want to sell the car. I'll give you a month or two. I know you're good for it." Thad had replied, "Let's write it up," but Piper said, "Nope, a handshake." "So, I shook his hand and we made a deal," says Thad.

A month later, Thad sold one of his Mustangs and sent Alan Piper a certified check for the 1966 Mustang K-code GT fastback.
