Ask any Chevrolet fan to name the most desirable Corvette ever produced, and 8 out of 10 of them will probably say the 1967 Sting Ray . Make mention of a big block, side pipes, and a sinister color combination and the level of interest goes from strong to off-the-charts in a matter of seconds.

There was a time when there wasn't a new car sold in the early 21st Century that could beat a Corvette from the Golden Age of high-performance cars, but speed isn't everything. Today it's all about rarity and Corvette Mike's Sunfire Yellow 1967 Corvette Sting Ray coupe is among the rarest of the rare. It's not because of its code 984 Sunfire Yellow there were 2,325 1967 Sting Rays painted that color. And it's not due to its QB1 redline tires there was 4,230 '67 Sting Rays equipped with those tires.

In 1967 there wasn't a high school kid alive that hadn't heard of the Corvette L88 engine and likely never forgot, but amazingly enough there was only 20 1967 Corvettes produced with an L88 engine — a $947.90 option that adds millions of dollars to the car's resale value today. As rare as the L88 engine was the $237.00 M22 Muncie "rock crusher" 4-speed transmission is equally as rare with only 20 sold to mate up with the L88. A sales rebate of sorts there were 35 1967 Corvette Sting Rays that received a $97.85 credit for C48 heater and defroster delete.

Somewhere with "Corvette" in the name, of course.Kai Spande is the plant manager for General Motors' Bowling Green Assembly Plant where the Chevrolet Corvette is produced, so it's safe to say this guy knows his Corvettes. Race cars as the L88 Corvette was intended to be are a rare breed from the day they are built, and their days are numbered either by obsolescence or a few major shunts puts them out of the game. The L88 engine in Mike's '67 is the engine that came in the car and still has its VIN legible on the deck of the block. This fact likely makes it the most intact 1967 L88 survivor in existence as engines were swapped in and out of racing Corvettes and usually the first time an L88 engine was rebuilt the machine shop shaved the VIN off when they decked the block.

Ultimate Vette was a racing phenom.Chevrolet had a phenomenal year in 1967. The brand launched a new generation of pickup trucks and introduced the world to the Camaro, which debuted the 350 V-8, the engine that would go on to be the standard bearer for the Chevrolet small-block for decades. It was also the final year for the second-generation Corvette, one of the most beautiful cars ever built. As a send-off, Chevrolet gave the 1967 Sting Ray a little-known engine option meant for racing, the L88 427.
