It makes an estimated 325 horsepower and 610 pound-feet of torque, and it's paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Representatives from Chrysler estimated the weight of the engine and transmission alone at 1,100 pounds. The diesel engine's power goes to the rear wheels, which are 22 inches in diameter and 11 inches wide with fat 325-mm tires. The front wheels are a tad narrower at 9.5 inches.

You can be forgiven if you've never heard about a special Canadian Mopar produced during the twilight of the muscle car era. Even Canadians themselves scratch their chins and furrow their brows when discussing this vehicle. So queue up a Chilliwack LP and prepare to learn about the 1971-1972 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 Special.

Demon-Powered Dodge Charger Is SpeedKore's Most Devilish Creation Yet

Demon-Powered Dodge Charger Is SpeedKore's Most Devilish Creation Yet Because a 1525-hp twin-turbo, all-wheel-drive Dodge Charger is just what the world needs, and we spotted it at SEMA. See more news from SEMA 2019The most impressive part of this wide-hipped wonder is what lies beneath the bonnet. The engine powering the SpeedKore Charger is a modified Demon engine that swaps its supercharger for a large custom intake plenum to withstand the 26 pounds of boost that will be force-fed from two Precision 6466 ball-bearing billet turbochargers housed just behind the front bumper.

First, let's back up a bit to 1967 and take a glance at the redesigned Dart. The top-of-the-line model in the series was the Dart GT, a fancy bucket-seat compact that had been around since 1963. Available engines ranged from the Slant Six up to the 235hp 273, but with the advent of the 280-horse 383 midyear, the GT turned into the GTS. For 1968, the Dart GTS became its own model, now offering the all-new 275-horse 340 standard with the option of the 300-horse 383.

In 1969, the Dart GTS was joined by a companion Dart Swinger 340. While it may appear the new model could have cannibalized Dart GTS sales, the truth was that the Swinger 340 was targeted at a slightly different segment. It was like a GTS given the Road Runner (or, more fittingly, the Super Bee) treatment with bench seat, rubber floor mat, and other basic accoutrements. For 1970, the Dart GTS was discontinued, and the restyled Dart Swinger 340 became Dodge's sole compact performance offering.

Watch Dodge Challenger SRT Demon Drag Race Rented Acura NSX The NSX doesn't lose all of these races against the Demon. The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon carries forward the classic muscle car recipe of putting a massive engine in a mid-sized coupe, and it uses the prodigious power to accelerate through the quarter mile quicker than just about anything on the road. Conversely, the Acura NSX typifies the modern method of creating a supercar by combining a twin-turbo V6 and three electric motors, in addition to lots of electronics to make the complicated setup work.

For 1971, the Dart Swinger 340 was replaced by the semi-fastback Demon 340. As a new, sportier version of the Dodge A-body compact, the Demon 340 was not quite the spiritual successor to the cheapie Dart Swinger 340.

Zane Feldman, the owner of Crosstown Motor City, recognized that there was a vacancy in the market that would be missed by the Canadian population. (In 1971, median household income was noticeably less than that in the United States, all things being equal.) Seeing an opportunity, the Edmonton, Alberta, businessman persuaded Chrysler's Canadian home office in Windsor, Ontario, to build a fleet of Dart Swinger Specials (the cheapest Dart Swinger hardtop) with the 340. His sales manager, Bob Beveridge, asked for 300 but, due to model year constraints at the time, Chrysler managed to build only 83. Then, a logistical issue arose as Crosstown was not able to maintain inventory of all the special-order cars. The solution suggested by the home office was for Crosstown to keep 63 cars and defer 20 to Crestview Dodge in Regina, Saskatchewan. Crestview in turn padded the order with several options. Additionally, two of the Crosstown cars were diverted to a dealership in Prince George, British Colombia. Here's how the batches were equipped.

Crosstown. Sixty-three cars were built on May 7, 1971, and painted in one of several of Dodge's High Impact colors: FY1 Top Banana (4), FC7 Plum Crazy (8), FJ6 Green Go (12), and EV2 Hemi Orange (39). They also featured standard Dart Swinger Special fare like rubber floor mats, no trim, and no rear seat armrests. Some received the nonfunctional Ramcharger-like hood that was available for the Demon 340. Two of these cars were sent to an unknown dealership in British Colombia.

Crestview. Twenty cars were built on May 13. Built in a myriad of Dart colors, all featured upgraded interiors with carpet and white pleated bench seats, Rallye wheels, scooped hood, chrome exhaust tips, and the A21 Exterior Decor Group, which included wheel-lip molding, drip-rail molding, and grille-surround molding. All had block heaters, too.

Both batches featured the bumblebee stripe that was standard fare for the 1970 Dart Swinger 340, although they are not coded for such and they may have been installed at the dealerships. They were built with a mix of transmissions (three- and four-speed manuals or TorqueFlites) and rear gears, with some receiving extra bracing via torque boxes. All featured front sway bars.

For the 1972 model year, Detroit readjusted its trousers thanks to a government-mandated move towards cleaner air. Compression in the 340 was down to 8.5, with horsepower down to 240 net. Crosstown Motor City didn't make a bid for a 1972 rerun but, when the home office in Windsor asked Feldman and Beveridge to help deplete a large amount of inventory from Chrysler's sales pool, the manufacturer sweetened the deal by suggesting it could build another set of those special-order Dart Swinger Specials with the 340. Crosstown requested 50 cars but, again, it was somewhat late in the season, and the Windsor plant was only prepared to build 30. Like before, Crosstown did not actually receive the whole allotment, as Pembina Dodge in Winnipeg made a fuss to be part of the action. The home office in turn earmarked five for the Manitoba dealership, which were built in a separate batch featuring several upgrades. Of the 25 left for Crosstown, two of them were sent to a dealership in Abbotsford, British Colombia.

Crosstown. The 23 cars (plus the two that went to British Colombia) were built on May 11, 1972, and featured plaid/vinyl split bench seat with rubber floor mat, HD sway bars, and shoulder belts.

Both batches were available in any Dart color, with all featuring the bumblebee stripe, any of the three transmissions (with 3.23 open rear), the new dual-scooped hood design borrowed from the Demon 340 (without the hood blackout), and front sway bar. Most had torque boxes.

Enigma Because they were not part of a dealer-initiated order, 1972 Dart Swinger 340 Specials flew under the radar for years, especially compared to the 1971s. Danny Fitzpatrick did not know he bought an enigma when he became the fourth owner of a Hemi Orange 1972 Dart Swinger 340 Special while in high school in 1979. A bank repossession, the Dart was equipped with a Starsky and Hutchinspired stripe and side pipes.

Danny continued where the previous owner had left off, repainting it black, adding several more speed parts, and extending the wheelwells to handle the 50-series tires out back.

In 1983, yearning for more power, Danny yanked the tired small-block (which wasn't the original one) for a stouter build. He also changed the tranny from a TorqueFlite to a four-speed . . . and then something funny happened the following year. He parked it.

For 31 years.

These fortuitous circumstances likely saved the rare Dart. Also fortuitous was Danny perusing the For A-Bodys Only website, where he discovered Cliff Guinand's thread on some Canadian specials. Recognizing that his car was from the Pembina batch, he went full rotisserie on the Dart in 2012, starting with research and parts collecting. As a paint and body man by trade, this stuff came easy to Danny, but it was no sweat regardless because the body had managed to avoid the ravages of Canadian winters while in storage.

This dart is a stock 318 with a 904 behind it. Its nothing special, and really rusted out. Especially the floor pans. I sold my 64 dart in 2010, and still have my 65 dart gt convertible 225 manual on the column. I got lucky and won this car on ebay, and pretty much just bought it to use in the most fun

Less than four years later, Danny finished the restoration, which included the transmission change. "Since it wasn't a numbers-matching engine, I decided to keep the four-speed in place," he says. "It's a lot more fun to drive."

So you know that guy, Cliff, mentioned above? Seems he found one of these special cars in 2004, but it was so far rotted that he wasn't going to be the one reviving it. However, a chance meeting with Kevin Kaiser—a gentleman who likely is the first person to restore one of these rarities—helped confirm that 340 Swingers were built as special orders in 1971-1972, despite most enthusiasts insisting the last year for the Dart Swinger 340 was 1970.

a blue car© Ken Woo

The shared mutual interest is how Cliff found a better car to restore. While searching for parts cars, Kevin stumbled upon two more Dart Swinger 340 Specials. It seems several barn finds were included in a property purchase in Alberta, and the Darts discovered within eventually found their way to Kevin. He sold Cliff the GB5 Bright Blue barn car (originally from Crosstown) with the plan he'd handle the core aspects of the restoration, which commenced in the spring of 2016. Cliff handled the duties of finishing the interior, brightwork, and detailing.

In 2018, the Dart made its debut at the Calgary World of Wheels, but made its biggest splash at MCACN in November later that year.

There are plenty of stories in the hobby of "my dad's friend owned a rare 427 Nova" or "my state police force had a pack of Hemis patrolling the streets," but those never pan out. The 1971-1972 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 Special is different, and credit goes to Cliff and his research (swinger340specials.ca) for proving that yes, Virginia, there was such thing as a Dart Swinger 340 after 1970. Oh, Canada indeed!
