It was just a fluke, Tim Childers said of his most recent Corvette purchase.
Tim lives in North Carolina and estimates he's owned probably 60 to 70 Corvettes over the years, but had none at the time this rare find popped up. He was curious when a friend said, "I know where a guy has got one in Kings Mountain (North Carolina) covered up."
The exact make and model were a mystery. His friend kept saying it was a "Diablo," which didn't make any sense. Chevrolet never made a Corvette Diablo, so maybe this was a hack job.
Tim drove to Kings Mountain to investigate the old car and found a late 1970's Corvette parked in the back of a house. On top of the Corvette was a rotten cover.
Tim knocked on the door on a Saturday morning. The owner was a man with the same first name, Tim.

"We went around and looked at it, looked under the hood, looked in the interior. It looked like he was getting ready to restore it years ago. He had the weatherstripping pulled out on the T-tops. The windshield was broken."
The owner said he bought the car 30 years ago. The turbo started giving him problems so he removed it and eventually parked the car right where it sat, more than 20 years ago.
Tim spied a faded decal on the side of the Corvette coupe that read "Duntov." Could this name be where his friend got the name Diablo?
Tim Childers was interested and asked if the car was for sale.
"He said 'Yeah, I want to sell it. I'll take $5,000. '"
Tim didn't hesitate and gave him his asking price.
With the deal done, Tim hauled the car back to his shop. He researched the history of the Duntov Corvette, which he found was made by American Custom Industries (ACI), the same company located in Sylvania, Ohio, that teamed up with racer John Greenwood to produce the Greenwood Corvettes in the early 1970s.

The widebody, which Tim thought was absolutely beautiful when he first saw the car now made sense. Greenwood Corvettes were known for their widebodies, which ACI used on the Duntov Corvette.
This Duntov was number 25, and titled as a 1977 model, which Tim figures "is a late 1977 because it looks like a '78. It's got the sugar scoop hatch on the back" and the "back glass actually lifts on this one."
Tim isn't quite sure what he will do with this Corvette. Whether or not to restore will come down to how easy or hard it is to track down parts. The components all appear to be all accounted for, except the turbo.
If anybody out there knows the correct turbo for the Duntov Corvette, send me an email and maybe we can help Tim get this classic back together. These cars are a living tribute to Zora Arkus-Duntov.
