The Plymouth Road Runner is a mid-size car with a focus on performance built by Plymouth in the United States between 1968 and 1980. By 1968, some of the original muscle cars were moving away from their roots as relatively cheap, fast cars as they gained features and increased in price.

Several years ago, Mark Sikora and his wife, Gwen, went to Lebanon Valley Dragway to watch a Factory Appearing Stock Tire (FAST) drag racing event. The experience dramatically ramped up Mark's interest in stock class drag racing and motivated him to join the fun. "I'd been a fan for years," he explains, "and always wanted to see these cars race in person. The basic idea of the class is to make a factory muscle car as fast as you can, but keep it stock looking. It's also heads up racing on a pro tree. It doesn't get more fun that that! I always had an interest in the sleeper concept. But these guys took it to another level. Low-10-second cars on 6-inch tires that looked like fresh restorations really blew me away! I knew right away it was something I'd love to do."

Mark and Gwen bought a 1969 Road Runner to compete with, but they were determined from the beginning that it would be a street car first and foremost. "Based on other similar factory appearing 383 Mopars, I knew that getting it into the 11s was doable," Mark points out, "but it wouldn't be easy, especially on 93-octane pump gas."

For hands-on help with the build, Mark relied on his longtime friend Scott Bracken and his friend's son, Mopar Scotty. He also had invaluable help from his wife, Gwen, whom he describes as "a bit of a motor-head herself". For invaluable technical advice, Mark turned to Bill Dicicco, a very experienced FAST racer he met at a Mopar Day at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. Dicicco who was there racing his stock-appearing 1968 Road Runner and the two became very good friends.

"The truth is, stock appearing racing is very different than any other class," Mark reflects. "Most of the typical tricks that apply to other classes just don't work well in FAST. Learning from someone else's success and mistakes goes a long way. The hardest part is working with the limitations of the rules and the car itself. In my case, the single most limiting factor in making big power is the '301' factory 4-bbl intake manifold. Mopar basically designed their cast iron intakes to work on standard B-engines, they're all pretty much the same intake in that era. My Road Runner is a factory 383 car and I plan to keep it this way. But for comparison, the same motor with a 6-pack intake would be worth about another 70 hp. That would take my car from high-11s to low-11s. I have made some small changes to the inside of the intake. After all, the rules state 'factory appearing.' But there is only so much you can do with the shape of it and we're probably talking about a 15- to 20hp improvement at best. The exhaust manifolds are another item that hinders air flow, but that's just something you have to design the engine around."

This Road Runner still had its original engine when Mark bought it, but he didn't want to hurt the numbers-matching block in his effort to go as fast as possible within the rules, so he set it aside and got another one. "As far as the engine goes," he explains, "it's about as basic as the factory 383. I just added a stroker crank, ported heads/intake and solid cam. I had Bruce from Toth Performance build a block that would run on pump gas and have some longevity. It ended up being 499 ci. Bigger is usually better when it comes to making power."

While cubic inches are directly related to output, maximizing airflow is just as important in getting the most out of any engine. To ensure that his big mill was getting all the air it could use, Mark turned to Dwayne Porter at Porter Racing Heads. "He's a go-to guy in factory appearing racing." Mark points out. "He's given me endless advice to help me get where I am with the car. He worked his magic on the heads and ported the runners on my intake. He's also one of the best regarding cam selection. That's an art in itself. An off-the-shelf grind for a typical drag car isn't going to work well with stock intake and exhaust manifolds. Lobe separation angle is key to limiting reversion in this type of a build."

Of course, all the power in the world is useless if it's not effectively channeled to the wheels and for that, Mark turned to the experts at Dynamic Converters/Pro-Formance Transmissions for a 727 automatic. It's crucial to configure this type of transmission to work with OEM bias-ply tires and stock suspension. Rock hard shifts and high stall speeds will prevent the tires from hooking up.

"When I first put the car together," Mark tells us, "I used a 9-inch converter that Frank Lupo of Dynamic Converters made as tight as possible. The idea is to launch the car well under peak torque to keep the tires from breaking lose as you roll on the gas. For me, that's about 2,000 rpm. It's worked very well, but at this point I'm looking to squeeze all the mph I can out of it. Frank is currently building me an 11" converter to try next season. A bigger converter should still launch well. But it will also be more efficient going down the track. While it's out, Shawn Wiley, also of Dynamic, is replacing all the thrust washers and bushings in the 727 trans with roller bearings to reduce friction. I'm at the point where every little bit helps."

With the engine producing 505 hp at 5,200 rpm and 550 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm, and the transmission effectively getting all that twist to the car's 3.91-geared Sure Grip rear, Mark's biggest challenge is getting the tires to stick. In keeping with the rules, he runs ordinary reproduction Firestone redlines that he buys from Coker Tire. With bias-ply construction and a 6-inch-wide tread, it is extremely challenging to get the most out of them on track.

"You set the car up around the limitations of the tires as much as you can and practice, practice, practice. It took me a while to get the feel for it. The best way to describe the launch style was a phrase I heard from another FAST racer, Dave Dudek, who said 'drive it like there's an egg on the pedal'. Many of the races are won and lost leaving the starting line. It's really easy to spin the tires and watch the guy next to you walk away. "Mat it and go" just doesn't work on stock tires. So far 1.70 is my best 60-foot time on the 6-inch redlines. That happened at a FAST race at Maryland International Raceway last past fall. Track prep is a big factor and they really do a great job with it. I also ran my personal best of 11.77 at 115 mph down there. Once you start getting up there in horsepower, getting the car to launch well is the single biggest variable in this class. For every tenth I can take off my 60-foot time, I can usually take 2-tenths off my e.t. Getting the car off the line smoothly is the trick to running well in this class."

In keeping with his original plan, Mark and Gwen also regularly enjoys their Road Runner on the street, and at nostalgia drag events. "We hit a lot of cruise nights and some car shows with it during the summer. I'd like to see more of the restored muscle cars on the track doing what they were built to do. Nostalgia races are a lot of fun, as well. Racing against cars with open headers and big slicks isn't easy. But we've surprised a few people leaving the starting line on redline tires. I'm not sure if I'd call it doing things differently or doing things the hard way. But I wouldn't do it any other way."
