Back in the day, Dodge wanted a hit similar to the success the Plymouth Road Runner was experiencing. Using the Scat Pack as inspiration, designers came up with this vehicle. This particular Dodge has only been owned by two people, so you’re not getting a problem everyone keeps passing on.

The Plymouth Road Runner is a mid-size car with a focus on performance built by Plymouth in the United States between 1968 and 1980. By 1968, some of the original muscle cars were moving away from their roots as relatively cheap, fast cars as they gained features and increased in price.

The Chrysler A12 option package was a mid-year introduction that was available for the Plymouth Road Runner and Dodge Super Bee. The A12 cars were powered by the high-performance 440 engine that was fed by three Holley two-barrel carburetors. The option included a Dana 60 rear with 4.10 gears with Sure-Grip for both automatic and stick cars. Cooling was upgraded with a 26-inch radiator.

As important as the A12 story is to Mopar history, the backstory of Ted Stephens' 9,200-mile original unrestored car is intriguing. The A12 was sold in Huntington, West Virginia, to a man who kept it until 1978, at which time Roy Dennison bought it. Dennison had learned of the car, but it took him a few years to purchase it, finally buying it for $5,000 in 1978. That was a lot of money for a nine-year-old car, but it turned out to be a good purchase. He cared for and protected the A12 meticulously for the next 37 years.

Dennison passed away a few years ago. Ted Stephens, owner of Stephens Performance, learned of the car and purchased it from Dennison's widow in 2016. At the time of the transaction, Stephens learned that Dennison always kept his Road Runner in a heated/air conditioned detached garage that had no rakes, no bicycles, and no lawn mowers. When he occasionally went to a local car show, Dennison would always bring an easy-up in order to protect the car from the sun's damaging rays.

In the early 1980s, the car was rained on twice, a light shower for a total time of about 10 minutes. Those two rainy drives home were the only time the windshield wipers were ever turned on. The wiper blades are born-with original. Stephens recalls Dennison's widow telling him that Roy never washed the car with water. With great admiration, let's agree that he was a fanatic.

Dennison kept all the original parts that he had replaced over the years, and those parts—among them a few hoses and the air cleaner—were included in the purchase. Those original parts are now back on the car, even if they show minimal wear.

The car has 100 percent of its original paint, with no touch-ups ever. Stephens replaced the mufflers and tailpipes with N.O.S. pieces. He "retired" the original tires and replaced them with Goodyear Red Streak reproductions from Kelsey. Of course, he still has the original tires. I have never seen a better unrestored A12 car, ever.
