Money is the great motivator in our society, and some even go so far as to claim that money is the root of all evil. We say money—or lack thereof—is actually the perfect recipe for creativity. "Money no object" builds are cool, but so is a budget build that involves your average guy making the best muscle car or hot rod he can within financial constraints.

This is where Will Brewer from Lexington, Kentucky, comes in because he figured out how to build a pretty sweet 1971 Dodge Charger, complete with a 440 engine, all without spending a fortune.

Here's the impetus of the whole build according to Will: "The 1971 to 1974 Chargers were always my favorite cars, and when it came time to get serious and find one, I wasn't able to find anything close to what I wanted." So, what did he do? "I decided to put one together myself," said Will. "After all, how hard could it be? They do it on TV in a few weeks, so surely I could knock out a project like that in a few months—a serious miscalculation on my part."

Without finding the Charger he wanted, a little ingenuity was called for. "I had found an orange 1971 Dodge Charger SE with a 318 on the internet. I traveled to Georgia with my girlfriend to look at it and decided to buy it." The little Mopar 318 wasn't going to cut it, though, so Will started looking around for a donor car from which he could borrow a bigger, more powerful engine.

"I later found a 1968 Chrysler New Yorker with a 440 engine and very few miles. I bought the Chrysler and did the swap (with the transmission still attached) at a friend's house [] and then I was the owner of both a 440 Charger and a 318 New Yorker. After selling the New Yorker, I had done the engine swap effectively for free."

The rest of the build wasn't quite as glamourous as Will had hoped and certainly took longer than the few months he'd initially planned for. "Over 10 years later I think that I finally have a little closure on this project," Will told us. In that decade, he learned as he went, making upgrades to the engine, rewiring the car, installing a new custom speaker system, and painting the car multiple times. "I was still trying to decide exactly on the look, so I impulsively chose to just jump in the first time I painted and bought about 20 rattle cans from one of the local big box stores. Then I later bought the tools I needed to do a 'real' paintjob and wound up painting the car and most of the inside of my puny garage in the process."

After over a decade of work, Will finally has his 1971 Dodge Charger looking and driving like he'd always dreamed. Well, sort of. "I plan on maybe finding some better headers in the future as well as making some other changes because it never ends; and maybe it shouldn't," Will admitted. And while we think Will's years of tinkering and wise use of funds turned out a pretty sweet budget build 440-powered Charger, we also get the never-ending desire to keep making it better and faster. After all, that's what hot rodding is all about, right?
