The BMW 3 Series: History, Buying Tips, Photos, and More BMW 3 Series Essential History To many, it may seem like the BMW 3 Series has always been with us. It nearly has, getting its start in 1975 as a two-door coupe that replaced the aging BMW 2002, itself a small, fun-to-drive coupe that both saved the BMW brand and served to bring BMW into the mainstream U.S. market. This first 3 Series was internally coded the E21 and featured designer Paul Bracq's crisp, clean "shark nose" styling.

Wilcox purchased the 1959 Coupe de Ville at a Barrett-Jackson auction in Arizona. It was a perfect condition car owned by one family, who hadn't driven it more than 4,000 miles in four decades. Wilcox made numerous changes in the years that followed—body-off modifications, fresh paint, and a new drivetrain—to upgrade the car's performance while maintaining its hard-to-improve looks.

For the most recent rebuild, Wilcox looked beyond his own shop near St. Paul, Minnesota, and teamed up with Rad Rides by Troy in Manteno, Illinois. Troy Trepanier built Wilcox's 1962 Cadillac convertible in 2001and has done work on a few of Randy's many other cars in the years since.

What Makes The 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville So Cool?

If rock 'n' roll was a car, it would be a 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. The elegance of Thirties era Cadillacs might match a Duke Ellington tune, but the full-volume flamboyance of the 1959 Cadillacs is all Elvis. Instantly recognizable by their extreme styling, the 1959 Cadillacs ended the decade (and Harley Earl's impressive reign as GM's head of design) with the flashiest redesign of any other year before or since. With those monstrous tailfins, quad headlights, long sleek top that looks chopped, equally sleek body lines, and generous quantities of chrome, the 1959 Cadillacs had as much radical styling in stock form as many of the custom cars being built at the time. And while a lot of customs have been built with those famous dual missile taillights, the 1959 Cadillacs are the only cars that came with them from the factory.

2020 Cadillac CT6 V8 review: Saving the best for last

2020 Cadillac CT6 V8 review: Saving the best for last Cadillac's full-size CT6 is surprisingly great with a Blackwing V8 under the hood. Too bad it's not long for this world.Let's recap: The Cadillac CT6 launched in 2016, with a trio of four- and six-cylinder engines, and a plug-in hybrid version soon followed. A small refresh in late 2018 brought sharper styling and a revised powertrain strategy. Just over a year later, the CT6 is already no longer in production, GM's Detroit-Hamtramck plant is now being retooled to produce all sorts of EVs.

What Is a Street Cruiser?

Street cruisers are full-sized 1950s and 1960s cars that have been modified for performance, looks, and comfort. Brian Brennan has described street cruisers as "1950s and 1960s-era full-size cars that are neither street machine nor muscle car, or any other neatly packaged family of hot rods." As the brawny big brothers of street rods, customs, and street machines, street cruisers are typically stock-bodied but with upgraded chassis and interiors, and modern high-performance engines

The street cruiser category has been promoted enthusiastically by the Shades of the Past Street Rod Association, which introduced a Street Cruiser award category to the Hot Rod Roundup car show in 2010.

Troy Trepanier and His Crew Perfect The Exterior

Rad Rides by Troy has accomplished amazing exterior restyling on many rods, customs, and muscle cars. This time, they chose to preserve and perfect the beloved lines by fine-tuning the gaps and extensively tweaking the trim until it was just right. That also meant retaining all the trim pieces, wipers, door handles, and locks—all the outside brightwork that belongs on a 1959 Cadillac. The custom silver blue metallic paint was sprayed by Warren Lewis at Rad Rides by Troy. The mirror finish is contrasted by the coarse-grain stainless vinyl used to cover the top. Rad Rides custom-built the 18-inch billet aluminum wheels to look like the original hubcaps—only better. Diamond Back Classic radial whitewalls add nostalgic appearance but with modern radial construction and a fat footprint. Wilwood provided the disc brakes behind the wheels.

1967 Mustang Is the Perfect Blueprint for a Coyote Swap

1967 Mustang Is the Perfect Blueprint for a Coyote Swap Wicked Fabrication has become the go-to shop for late-model Coyote V-8 swaps, and Byron Tudor’s 1967 Mustang is the latest example. The good thing we speak of is the 1967 coupe that was given to Byron by his girlfriend's sister, Holly. Holly had driven the plain white coupe for a number of years before parking it in the late '90s due to its declining condition and concerns regarding reliability. After having it sit in her garage for nearly 20 years and concluding she was unlikely to get it back on the road, Holly offered it to Byron—free of charge. It was important to Holly that her Mustang go to a good home.

Swapping A GM LSA 6.2L V8 Supercharged Engine Into A 1959 Cadillac

a car engine © Robert McGaffin

Because practical performance is as important to Wilcox as good looks, his Cadillac runs a potent 650-horse GM LSA engine with an aluminum block and heads. The engine is fed by a GM Eaton supercharger. For style, the blower cover and the custom fabricated coil covers are dressed up with art deco ornamentation and lettering. Custom pipes by Rad Rides carry the exhaust from the GM manifolds through Flowmaster mufflers. Bowler Performance Transmissions prepared the 4L80E trans backing up the GM LSA engine.

Rebuilding The Chassis For The GM LSA Engine

The Rad Rides builders modified the stock frame, altering the front crossmember to support the LSA engine it now carries. The front and rear springs were shortened and paired with RideTech adjustable shocks to make Wilcox's Coupe de Ville ride like a Cadillac—but not a 60-year-old Cadillac.

Award-Winning Custom Interior

Spectators will see the Cadillac mostly from the outside, but Wilcox is enjoying the car from the inside, where the quality and style is equal to every other inch of the car. The seats were rebuilt on the 1959 Cadillac frames, modified to recline, and covered in azure blue Garret pebble grain leather. The floor is covered in dark gray German cut pile carpet. The dash was upgraded, but it honors the stock look. Modifications include custom Dakota Digital gauges in a fabricated gauge surround. Rad Rides created a one-off, leather-wrapped steering wheel. Climate control is provided by the Vintage Air A/C, and the soundtrack comes courtesy of a McIntosh audio receiver with Diamond Audio amp, sub, and speakers.

When Troy Trepanier and his team at Rad Rides by Troy were finished, Randy Wilcox had what he wanted: a nostalgic 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville with old-time style and new-time functionality. The Cadillac had a lot of success on the hot rod show car circuit in 2019 before its appearance at Shades of the Past Hot Rod Roundup in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, where the car was selected as the Best Street Cruiser in the STREET RODDER/Painless Performance Products Triple Crown of Rodding.
