Hannu Mikkola was one of the defining figures in rallying well into the 1980s. He was one of Walter Röhrl's great rivals. In the two World Cup triumphs of the Regensburger in 1980 and 1982, the Scandinavian took second and third place. In 1983, Mikkola himself became world champion in an Audi. By 1993 he had competed in 123 World Championship rallies and celebrated 18 victories. In 2011 he was inducted into the Rally Hall of Fame.
