Classics Piston Slap: Melting paint and draggin’ drums on a Daytona?
Daytona Bike Week Is on for 2021
City agrees to issue permits with some restrictions for March 5–14 event. On January 20, the city decided to allow for permit and rally business applications for 2021 Daytona Bike Week. Some of the main drivers in their decision were the fact that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the Daytona rally, and local bars and restaurants volunteered to reduce their occupancy by 40 percent; with that the commissioners felt comfortable enough to give a thumbs-up to the event despite lingering concerns over the pandemic. This year’s big two-wheel bash on the beach will also run its usual 10-day course, unfolding from March 5 to March 14.
Hi, I have a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona and the rear brakes don’t release and actually get too hot—they melt paint on wheels. The car is drivable after sitting till the next day.
To be honest, I already found the problem, but let’s get this out in case others have a similar issue. (Agreed! – SM)
One of the perks of these highly desirable, highly modified (well, on the outside)is the fact that they use mechanical bits from their Charger counterparts, including the rear drum-brake hardware. And these drum brakes can get sticky if they are out of adjustment, or if the emergency brake cables are not releasing.

Hagerty has a greaton drum brakes, but since you already solved the problem, I’ll take a and say you need to spend some quality time with the brake-adjuster screw and a screwdriver. Or that specialized tool that’s superior to a screwdriver. The adjustment must be done with the emergency brake disengaged.
What are the odds I got this diagnosis right?
