A mining detector rat that had been decorated for his bravery in Cambodia after helping to save lives died, Tuesday announced the NGO that formed it.

Magawa, a Giant African rat native to Tanzania, helped clean some 225,000 m2 of land, the equivalent of 42 football fields, during its five years of career.

After detecting more than one hundred mines and other explosives, the big rodent had retired last June.

Magawa died "peacefully" during the last weekend at the age of eight, told the Belgian NGO Apopo in a statement.

for the detection of TNT contained by the explosives, it had taught it to scratch on the earth to report its presence to humans.

This technique, which is not based on the presence of scrap, allows to work much faster than with a metal detector.

From the top of its 70 cm, Magawa could thus move to the end comb the equivalent of a tennis court in 30 minutes, task that would take up to four days to a human equipped with a metal detector.

In September 2020, Magawa was awarded a gold medal by the British Peda Pets Protection Association (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals), which rewards an animal every year for its bravery.

Magawa was the first rat to receive this reward, considered as the equivalent for the animals of the Georges Cross (George Cross), the greater honor awarded to civilians.

According to PDSA, between 4 and 6 million mines were laid in Cambodia from 1975 to 1998, making more than 64,000 victims.
