Since the start of the pandemic, many of us have taken to Twitter to share our feelings. The London Museum has thus decided to acquire several tweets shared by Londoners during the spring confinement. Digital writings that enrich his “Going Viral” collection project.

This digital initiative was launched during the spring containment, in order to "study and record the increase in the use of social networks by Londoners to share their common experiences" of the pandemic. The thirteen tweets acquired by the Museum of London highlight "people's emotions and frustrations during this unprecedented year". They have also all been viral, and have been shared or "liked" over 30,000 times on Twitter.

"Humor and sarcasm have always been an inherent characteristic of Londoners, but they have mostly been used as coping mechanisms throughout history, in times of crisis and hardship. The Covid-19 pandemic is no exception, imagination, creativity and spirit uniting us in new ways now that we are physically separated by measures of social distancing, "said Foteini Aravini, digital curator at the Museum of London.

Tweets to dreams, there is only one step

The museum was inspired by a research project carried out by Twitter last August to launch "Going Viral". Social network researchers had notably noticed the appearance of new behaviors linked to the pandemic, including an increased use (+ 60%) of the “crying face” emoticon. “In a year when we were forced to keep our distance from others, people came together virtually on Twitter. The tweets collected by the Museum of London show just how much humor and a sense of community have helped Londoners to adapt and help each other, "said David Wilding, manager at Twitter UK.

In recent months, the Museum of London has stepped up initiatives to collect artefacts linked to the pandemic. He notably joined forces with the Museum of Dreams at Western University in Ontario for the "Guardians of Sleep" project. Its goal ? Collecting the dreams of the inhabitants of the English capital in the form of video testimonies, in order to "provide a more emotional and personal account of this time for future generations".
