Motorcycles are either outside many people’s purview or they just don’t care. A Panigale might as well be a Virago, and an MV Agusta might as well be chopped liver.

This weekend Royal Enfield showed us the 650 models it's bringing into the US in 2018. The three models were unveiled at IMS in Long Beach and are led by the highly anticipated Himalayan model to the North America market. The Himalayan is purpose-built for adventure — allowing for a less extreme and more accessible form of adventure touring. 2018 will also bring the company’s newest offerings — the Interceptor 650 and the Continental GT 650 Twin. Both feature the recently introduced 650 parallel twin engine.

Royal Enfield North America will bring the popular Himalayan model to dealers in summer 2018. Purpose-built for adventure, the Himalayan is built on a rugged duplex split cradle frame designed and developed by Harris Performance. The Himalayan’s 9-inch ground clearance ensures it can take on obstacles comfortably. An optimal wheel size combination allows for better control while riding over rocks and ruts. The Himalayan is powered by an overhead camshaft engine platform that forms the base for its new long-stroke LS 410 engine. The engine delivers high torque and usable power at lower RPMs to make for smooth riding in higher gears at lower speeds, making it easier to climb hills or maneuver through traffic. Modern design and materials translate to increased efficiency and low maintenance.

Royal Enfield Concept KX V-Twin First Look Royal Enfield shows where its head is at Royal Enfield took time at this year’s EICMA Show in Milan to showcase its Concept KX V-twin, a collaboration between design teams in India and the UK. It’s explicitly mentioned in press material that this machine will only live as a concept, with no plans, currently, for a move to production. Despite the fact that we’ll presumably never have the chance to own the new KX, it does have an interesting story. Royal Enfield created the motorcycle in six months, from drawing board to prototype, and it takes design cues from the brand’s 1938 Model KX, an 1,140 side-valve V-twin. The model, at the time, purportedly represented a pinnacle of achievement in “luxury motorcycling.” Royal Enfield has been capitalizing on both is heritage and the current popularity of retro-modern motorcycles with models like the Classic, Bullet, Continental GT, and others. These are all midsize parallel twins, so a move to make the KX would represent a notable expansion for the brand. This also likely explains why it won’t be coming to market anytime soon. That’s unfortunate too, because the use of copper, leather, the girder fork, modern lighting components, and CNC-machined wheels and engine heads all give the Concept KX a really interesting look. Touring utility is built inherently into the Himalayan. A 4-gallon fuel tank provides a long range of approximately 280 miles. An ergonomical sync between foot pegs, handlebar and seat height provides a comfortable upright riding posture that is necessary for long rides. An accessible 31.5-inch seat height with lower mass-balance ensures ease of planting feet on the ground for complete control. The Royal Enfield Himalayan comes fitted with dual-purpose tires that lend a confident grip and performance across a range of conditions. In addition to complete braking control, the 300 mm front and 240 mm rear disc brakes help to reduce braking effort.

The Himalayan will be in available in two colors — Graphite and Snow — in the summer of 2018. The model will retail for $4,499 MSRP and will offer a full range of motorcycle accessories.

The Interceptor 650 ushers in the idea of 1960s fun with its classic teardrop-shaped fuel tank, quilted twin seat, and distinctive wide-brace handlebars. The wide-braced handlebars offer comfortable ergonomics and a confident and commanding riding position. The motorcycle is equipped with classic 18-inch front and rear Pirelli tires and twin shock absorbers, along with front and rear disc brakes with ABS.

Also new to the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 is the six-speed gearbox, especially developed for this motorcycle. The gearbox is augmented by its “slip/assist” clutch that facilitates easy riding in traffic — also a first for Royal Enfield. Royal Enfield also showcased the ground-up, all-new Continental GT 650 Twin. The motorcycle retains its central cafe racer character while bringing in new engineering and design improvements. The motorcycle has an eager, front-leaning stance that gives it a sporty look and a speedy form. The Continental GT 650 Twin’s ergonomics offer easy reach to the mid-level handlebars for an optimum blend of steering feel and comfort with no compromise to its 3.3-gallon fuel tank capacity. Like the Interceptor 650, the Continental GT 650 Twin sports disc brakes front and rear with ABS. The upswept exhaust and rear-set footrests give the motorcycle plenty of lean angle. The single seat, sculpted tank and clip-on bars complete the authentic look.

The motorcycles are powered by the first modern Royal Enfield 650 Parallel twin engine. This new platform is a single overhead cam, 8-valve air-/oil-cooled 648 cc parallel twin, producing 47 bhp and 52 Nm.The chassis has been developed from the ground up by the team at Royal Enfield’s UK Technology Centre and Harris Performance. It has been engineered and fine-tuned for enhanced agility that can handle different terrains and speeds with ease while retaining the period classic style.

Both the Interceptor 650 and the Continental GT 650 Twin are targeted to be available in the back half of 2018 in a variety of colors and two distinct styles — Standard and Retro Custom, with a target price of less than $7,000.
