Cycle World hits the track on the 2019 Husqvarna FS 450 , a purpose-built supermoto weapon that may just be the best-kept secret in trackday fun.

Pound for pound, you'll be hard pressed to find a more exciting motorcycle to rip around the racetrack on than Husqvarna 's fabulous FS 450 . For 2019

Husky’s supermoto is the best-kept trackday secret

Husqvarna’s FS 450 is a closed-course competition only supermoto racer ready to rip off the showroom floor; and it’s probably already sold out for 2019. It’s a niche racer that is so damn fun and so easy to ride, why wouldn’t or couldn’t they sell more? Because supermoto is on life support in the US, a true boom and then bust story. Basically supermoto is now a behind-the-scenes pastime for sportbike racers and flat-trackers after popularity fell off a cliff at the end of the 2000s.

Even so, Husqvarna still has a fondness for supermoto and produces the only production competition supermoto model available today. Only about 150 examples of the all-new 2019 model are available, that’s not many—less than one per dealer. For $10,799, you get a machine based on Husky’s FC 450 motocross model with the requisite equipment for shredding the heck out of the local SM or kart track. No need for modifying an MXer; put gas in the 1.85-gallon tank, check the pressures in the Bridgestone Battlax Supermoto slicks and the WP AER 48 air fork, and hit the track. That’s it.

2019 Husqvarna FS 450 First Ride© Nik Wogen Husqvarna claims 63 peak horsepower from the FS 450’s 449.9cc engine.

The FS 450 shares much with the motocross-only FC 450, including the 449.9cc single-overhead-cam, four-stroke single that produces a Husqvarna-claimed 63 hp. A new cylinder head is more compact and 1.1 pounds lighter than the 2018 model. Internally a new Pankl-sourced five-speed transfers that power to the ground though a Suter slipper clutch. There are two maps available to tailor the throttle response and power to the rear wheel, just press the lighted switch on the left side of the ProTaper handlebar. That switch is used to activate launch control and traction control. Both limit power to the rear wheel to maximize drive on starts and less-than-perfect traction.

The chrome-moly steel frame and carbon-fiber subframe are also the very same units used on the FC 450. For 2019, the frame has more longitudinal rigidity than the 2018 model, and the subframe is now a two-piece unit rather than the previous three-piece, cutting a half-pound of weight. All good news for a track weapon such as the FS 450.

Suspension is lower with less travel for supermoto duty. A WP shock controls the action of the cast aluminum swingarm via a linkage. Using the supplied air pump and gauge, the air pressure can be adjusted in the left side of the WP AER 48 fork for a custom “spring” rate for each rider and condition. The right leg handles compression and rebound damping.

2019 Husqvarna FS 450 First Ride© Nik Wogen Braking duties on the FS 450 are handled by a big Brembo M50 caliper and a 310mm wave rotor.

Alpina tubeless spoked wheels (17-inch rear, 16.5-inch front) are wrapped with Bridgestone Battlax Supermoto slicks. At the front, a 310mm wave rotor is squeezed by a massive Brembo M50 four-piston caliper. A radial Brembo master cylinder supplies the pressure needed to the M50 unit. A 220mm wave rotor and single-piston caliper handle rear-wheel velocity.

We took to the pavement this week to test Husqvarna 's all-new FS 450 Supermoto bike.

It’s been 19 years since I turned a lap on a supermoto, but within a lap on the FS 450 I was dragging the wide MX-style pegs and my knees. Right out the gate, the chassis felt balanced and stable on the short and choppy track. Knee down or leg out or a combination of both—the Husky doesn’t care how you ride it; it just hooks a corner with massive grip and exceptional feel. Transitions from side to side are instantaneous and snappy.

As the first session wound down and lap times dropped, I found a few adjustments were needed. Husqvarna's techs had already set the proper sag for my weight, so only a couple of clicker adjustments and lower tire pressure were needed. I found the front end liked rebound a little too quickly causing some instability in a couple of the bumpier corners; three clicks of additional rebound damping did the trick. I also lowered the hot tire pressure to 24.5 pounds for more bite when leaned all the way over.

2019 Husqvarna FS 450 First Ride© Nik Wogen Power comes on strong from the FS 450’s reworked engine, but the delivery is controllable and easy to manage, even without traction control activated.

Power delivery from the updated 450 engine builds quickly but is not overwhelming, even in the most aggressive map setting. I rode two laps in the less agressive Map 2, but found it too mellow. However if we were allowed into the dirt section of Adams Motorsports Park, then that map may have been the hot ticket.

Top 5 Concept Motorcycles From The 2018 EICMA Show Oh, if only these five bikes were put into production.

The Husqvarna FS 450 Supermoto receives another round of updates in 2019 , with major chassis and engine updates, and a four-pound reduction in weight. The first major changes occurred in 2016 when the Swedish brand cut some weight, and then for 2018 when Husky upgraded the 450 cc engine

With Husqvarna ’s recent release of the FS 450 , a race-ready supermoto version of their FC 450 motocrosser, the price and functionality of the bike made it a no-brainer purchase. The pre-setup bike had all of the basic parts needed to get around the track

Traction control does work, but is not needed when the track is dry and clean, like it was for us on press day. I did use it in half of my sessions and feel that forward drive was slightly affected. It did save the embarrassment of a lowside, however, when I clipped an apex too tight and ran up on the curbing with a handful of throttle. The power cut just for an instant, keeping the rear end inline and beneath me. Again, probably the go-to setting in the dirt.

2019 Husqvarna FS 450 First Ride© Nik Wogen Changing the engine map and turning on and off traction control and launch control is just a button press away.

There is no better braking experience than on a supermoto, and the FS 450 is magnificent. The front brake has excellent feel and hauls the Husky down from speed with authority. Fade was never an issue for the entire day, even as the temperature rose. The real fun comes when you come in hot, drop down three gears, apply the rear brake, and let the rear end step out. I could do that all day everyday, skipping the rest for the track, and I would be happy as a clam.

After a full day slaying slicks, it’s clear that supermoto and the 2019 Husqvarna FS 450 are the best-kept secrets in trackday fun. Hopefully with motorcycles like this, supermoto makes a comeback, even if it’s 150 units at a time...
