The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is incredibly quick. From the factory, it can put up sub-10 second quarter-mile times, making it quicker than anything else you can buy new with a license plate. The folks at Speedkore weren't satisfied, though, so they set out to make the Demon even quicker. It looks like they've succeeded.

Carbon fibers or carbon fibres (alternatively CF, graphite fiber or graphite fibre) are fibers about 5–10 micrometres in diameter and composed mostly of carbon atoms. Carbon fibers have several advantages including high stiffness, high tensile strength, low weight, high chemical resistance

Carbon fiber passed the ultimate test in 1995 when General Electric developed the first generation of carbon-fiber blades for the huge fan of the GE90, still the most powerful turbofan engine in production today (the GE90-115 set an absolute record of 127,900 pounds of thrust). After GE demonstrated the absolute reliability of the new composite material, carbon fiber became a natural choice for any project engineer under pressure to conjugate maximum structural rigidity with minimum weight.

The Speedkore Evolution, a carbon-bodied 1970 Dodge Charger with a modified Demon engine, was one of the coolest things to come from SEMA last year. Jay Leno got a chance to drive it with Speedkore's vice president, Dave Salvaggio, and it's exactly as over-the-top as you expect a 3200-pound car with 966 rear-wheel horsepower and a six-speed manual to be.

Just for an additional confirmation I will further cite that GE latest super turbofan jet engine, the mighty GE9X, features a 134-inch fan that has already been fully validated at the end of the most extreme reliability test cycle, that included the ingestion of huge ice balls shot at very high speed into the engine while it is working full throttle on the bench. Not one hitch.

Yet carbon-fiber wheels, for both cars and motorcycles, have received limited attention from the industry. The number of manufacturers is rather limited, and only Ford adopted carbon-fiber wheels, on its Mustang GT350, and only at EICMA 2018 did we seem them on production motorcycles, with MV Agusta’s introduction of its Brutale B4 1000.

In the name of safety, duly strict homologation regulations and tests have buffered enthusiasms. But today’s duly selected carbon-fiber wheels grant massive advantages: lightest unsprung mass and lowest flywheel inertia, with totally solid reliability. A test rider told me that carbon-fiber wheels can shrink lap times by very meaningful margins—almost two seconds at Misano.

Among the most prominent carbon-fiber wheels manufacturers, Slovenian Rotobox returned to EICMA 2018, after a one-year hiatus, with a very large range of wheels that showed improved quality over those previous years.

All Rotobox carbon-fiber wheels received JASO (Japanese Automotive Standards Organization) T 203-85 for JWL dotE certification, and thus they conform to all major road safety regulations. Their large, five-spoke design is massive and not particularly creative, but the Rotobox team wanted to play it very safe, yet their high-precision (all moulds are CNC machined from stainless steel), Resin Transfer Moulding monolith construction ensures the lightest possible weight in relation to their structural rigidity. A very interesting touch of extra safety, though at the cost of a little extra peripheral weight, is represented by the integration of two 2.5mm stainless steel wires in the rim, where the tire beads sit against it. This creates additional resistance in case of mean impacts against potholes or obstacles on the road.

To underline the meaningful weight advantage over various options, Rotobox compared the total weight of a set of its carbon-fiber wheels for the BMW S1000RR (in 3.5 x 17 and 6.00 x 17 sizes) with the stock OEM units and the result is impressive: 14.7 pounds versus 25.8 pounds. Also Rotobox touts a weight advantage in comparison to JWL dotE homologated magnesium wheels.

The range of Rotobox wheel models today covers all the medium- and high-performance bikes of the main European and Japanese makes, plus Harley-Davidson XR1200 (I love that), Dyna Street Bob, Fat Bob, and Touring models. The list also includes both standard and single-side-arm rear wheels, including the monstrous 8.00 x 17 for the Ducati Diavel.

In addition to its bold range of carbon-fiber wheels, at EICMA 2018 Rotobox unveiled its concept of trackday supermoto, called the Splice and based on a Yamaha WR450F. Compared to the original Yamaha models, Rotobox Splice features a 30mm-lower stance, specific Öhlins suspension front and rear, and, of course, their own carbon-fiber wheels in 3.5 x 17 front and 5.5 x 17 rear, shod with 120/60-17 front and 190/65-17 rear Bridgestone slicks.

Major chassis alterations include the adoption of a FG 461 Öhlins fork featuring a 24mm-offset front wheel axle and 14mm-offset triple clamps, machined from solid billet. At the rear the Öhlins TTX shock absorber is associated with a Yamaha R6 rear swingarm that needed serious machining to fit into its new home. Braking system is by Brembo, with a 320mm single front disc teamed to a monoblock racing GP4-RR caliper. A Brembo 220mm rotor and an X20 racing caliper takes care of the braking activity at the rear. Rotobox added proprietary carbon-fiber fenders and instrumentation minifairing, plus a nice graphics job. The final result is a low-standing (the seat height is 35.4 inches) and very lean bike tipping the scale at only 262 pounds, with a full tank. Rotobox Splice does not come cheap at 29,830 euros ($34,228).

This Is a New Dodge Hellcat Made to Look Like a 1969 Charger.
Legendary DJ Funkmaster Flex comissioned this build, which makes its debut today at SEMA. What happens when you don't think a new Dodge Challenger is quite retro enough? You get someone to stick the body of an old muscle car on top. Legendary DJ Funkmaster Flex got New York City shop Valanca Auto Concepts to do exactly that, and the company made him a new Challenger Hellcat with bodywork that apes a 1969 Charger. So underneath the old-school-looking Charger body, which features a number of custom carbon-fiber components, it's all modern Hellcat.
