One of Europe's iconic summer motorcycle festivals, Wheels and Waves is centered around classic and custom bikes and the eighth edition had more than its share of radical builds—including the one you're looking at here. A joint effort between Royal Enfield and BAAK Motocyclettes, the bike dubbed Gallinella is a refined throwback with elegant, handcrafted lines ladled onto a factory-ready platform.

This Custom Royal Enfield Desert Runner Ain’t Afraid Of No Dirt

This Custom Royal Enfield Desert Runner Ain’t Afraid Of No Dirt A scrambler we'd actually take out in the desert. Royal Enfield opted for a standard and café racer look with the design of its new Continental GT 650 and INT 650. That didn’t keep a number of custom shops to turn either of the Twins into the single retro style the company hasn’t properly touched on yet: the scrambler. Some versions resulted in scramblers in name but not in purpose. This isn’t the case with Revival Cycles’ design. This Interceptor-based scrambler goes way beyond the simple aesthetic. We would totally take it out on the trails and we’re pretty sure it would be a hoot.

BAAK Motocyclettes has been at this for a while now—the Lyon, France-based shop has cranked out multiple builds over the last few years that inject modern OE bikes with a classic sensibility, but with a prototype-level of execution. The builds we’ve seen are seamless, meticulously crafted works, some even featuring plug-and-play parts that can be adapted to the stock bikes, and this INT650 is no exception.

Royal Enfield Sales Drop Sparks Talks Of A New, Cheaper Bike

Royal Enfield Sales Drop Sparks Talks Of A New, Cheaper Bike The company is attacking the drop on different fronts. require(["medianetNativeAdOnArticle"], function (medianetNativeAdOnArticle) { medianetNativeAdOnArticle.getMedianetNativeAds(true); }); Royal Enfield has been the talk of the town on the neo-retro scene with its delightfully vintage-looking bikes that have barely evolved for the past 50-60 years. Until now, those good looks easily translated into sales, but it seems like not even its vintage military style bikes have kept the company's sales from nosediving.

Gallinella is undeniably retro yet somehow contemporary, and it's BAAK's first bike based on the Royal Enfield 650 Interceptor twin. The flared, skirted rear fender strikes an unusual profile no matter how you squint at it, riffing on a trend that was popular in 1950s-and-'60s-era Triumphs and BSAs in Europe, which often had fully enclosed rear ends called "bathtubs."

BAAK Motocyclettes Builds A Righteous Royal Enfield Custom© Courtesy BAAK Motocyclettes That rear piece was entirely shaped by hand in house from aluminum to give this Royal Enfield a truly unique style.

Those metal-heavy rears—some totally covered, others less conspicuous (called "bikinis")—never caught on in the US, probably because they made it a real pain to service the bikes. But in Gallinella's case, the rear fender concept is trimmer in execution than the original, going for more modern proportions. This mash-up of old and new is a hallmark of BAAK builds, and the approach feels like a great fit for the back-to-basics vibe of the Interceptor 650 platform, though the folks at BAAK say the actual aluminum "bathtub" bodywork (as well as other parts) took some time to create and shape.

What Happens When a Former Fighter Pilot Builds A Hot Rod

What Happens When a Former Fighter Pilot Builds A Hot Rod For many rodders, their street rod might be the most exciting thing they ever pilot. As a former fighter pilot, Brett has a higher standard for thrills. This coupe, built in the Cairns' home garage, is the rod we'd expect him to build. He started the project with a Factory Five tubular frame and upgraded the suspension with QA1 coilovers and other components. An LS3 E-Rod engine runs a custom Spectre Air Intake system and aluminum cover, Billet Specialties valve covers, and a Concept One pulley system. Custom headers connect to a MagnaFlow exhaust system. The engine is backed by a 4L65E transmission and Ford 8.

BAAK Motocyclettes Builds A Righteous Royal Enfield Custom© Courtesy BAAK Motocyclettes BAAK is a full-service shop that creates bespoke pieces for bikes (including this flat black leather seat), sometimes working directly with manufacturers to create bolt-on pieces for current models.

That funky rear fairing, it turns out, was the masterpiece of the project, into which the team put all kinds of design and manufacturing effort. It's also notable for the fact that it goes in the opposite direction of the current trend of stripping down motorcycles, but that's a whole other story.

BAAK Motocyclettes Builds A Righteous Royal Enfield Custom© Courtesy BAAK Motocyclettes BAAK’s own prototype stainless bars made the cut, with levers provided by Kustom Tech and Biltwell’s Renegade grips at the end. The headlight brackets hold built-in LED indicators.

Staying true to form, the entire build mixes classic parts as well as current custom pieces, with bits like a retro-flavored Lucas P700 headlamp and a modern Motogadget speedo, both nestled in the headlight shell. The custom-made aluminum rear fairing also holds a classic round taillight, while BAAK’s own N°1 brushed stainless steel handlebars with aluminum clamps make an appearance too, serving as a mount for Kustom Tech clutch and front brake levers.

Gallinella might as well be a rolling preview of plug-and-play parts BAAK is designing for the stock Royal Enfield Interceptor/Continental GT 650 machines too, such as those wide stainless steel handlebars, the leather seat, classic headlight, and custom controls. The goal, BAAK says, was for a complete, harmonious build rather than just a parts-bin bolt-on of other manufacturers' parts, so the team specifically designed and created many of the components just for this project.

These guys are French, so of course there was a movie featuring this particular build filmed during the Wheels and Waves Festival in case you'd like to see the thing in action. In fact, I found something like three or four movies, all Truffaut-quality, each endowed with top-shelf edits and gorgeous orchestration, included on the press kit too. So we waded through them all and picked the shortest one here; enjoy…
