If there’s one constant in this ever-shifting blur of a world, it’s that prices keep going up. Motorcycles aren’t immune to annual cost corrections, and you have to dig around a bit to find decent buys these days for a new street-legal two-wheeler that’s not a pitbike. As you’d expect, entry-level bikes tend to rule this price category, but there are deals out there, especially when you expand your search beyond the ever-shrinking cruiser pool. You won’t find the sportier sub-500cc models here (no Ninja 300, KTM 390 Duke, or Kawasaki Z400), because that’s not what this site is about, but we managed to snag a few full-size standards to add to our list, and decided to skip the riding-school cruiser rejects (250cc and under). So in order of price, here’s our list of the best bikes you can buy new for under $8,000.

Honda’s entire cruiser lineup for 2020 is priced at under $10K (except for the Fury), and a couple of its standard models are too, but we’re adding both Rebels for this year because they received welcome upgrades, improving what was already an excellent platform while still keeping the price affordable. 2017’s redesign brought a low price tag, low seat height, and an easily managed powerplant, thus solidifying the 300’s status as a top entry-level bike, but the improved comfort, suspension, and styling for 2020 also makes it a solid all-arounder. A new slip and assist clutch makes the scene as well, giving the bike even more user-friendly props. The only difference between the 300 and 500 models is the engine; the Rebel 300’s 286cc single is plucked right from Honda’s own CB300, meaning you get a reliable, user-friendly mill in an easy-to-ride package at a price that hasn’t changed this year ($4,500). Suzuki Boulevard S40: $5,799

Technically only available as a 2019 model (it’s on Suzuki’s website, but not officially as a 2020), we’d wager the evergreen S40 shouldn’t be too hard to find at your local dealership regardless. Some of us will probably never be able to stop calling it the Savage, but even after 30 years, the S40 is still an incredible value. This single-cylinder cruiser not only represents a back-to-the-basics mentality (simplicity first!) but it’s also the most affordable model in Suzuki’s Boulevard lineup. There’s no question about the S40’s budget-bike status, given its air-cooled and carbureted 652cc single, bare-bones running gear with price point suspension, a solo front brake disc, and rear drum brakes, but you do get a four-valve cylinder head to improve output, and a low-maintenance belt drive. Newbies and smaller riders will be pleased with the S40’s low 27.6-inch seat height, reasonable weight, and wide pullback handlebar too. If nothing else, it’s a great platform for a custom project. Although the Rebel 500 is pretty darn similar to the 300, we decided to add it anyway after riding it recently, as it’s in some ways a better motorcycle, especially for more seasoned riders. Part of the reason for that is the gruntier, smoother, and more powerful 471cc parallel-twin engine (shared with the CB500F and CB500X models), while the better suspension and styling tweaks for 2020 (on both Rebels) certainly don’t hurt either, even if it’s all still on the same chassis as the 300. The Rebel 500 also retains its attractive price point for this year, which hasn’t changed at $6,200. Its accessibility will still bring in newbies, while its versatility will rope in the more experienced set. GT or INT? Frankly, it’s a tough choice—either model represents an incredible value for a capable, full-size streetbike. Unlike the two Rebels, the differences between these two are more ergonomic; both are stylish, affordable, and powered by the same 648cc air-and-oil-cooled parallel-twin engine with four valves per cylinder and a mild compression ratio of 9.5:1. The INT650 gets the classic looks of a throwback British roadster, with a clean design, wide bars, and an upright seating position, and while you won’t win many races with this 47-hp machine, it’s still a blast to ride, and you do get a six-speed gearbox, fuel injection, and ABS included. We chose the Interceptor as our Bike of the Year last year mainly because it’s a reliable, easy-to-ride, and easy-to-own motorcycle that’ll appeal to riders of all stripes. Same old, same old? Not really—although the Continental GT may roll with the same twin-cradle, tube-steel frame and parallel-twin engine package, it mixes up the formula somewhat with its weight-forward stance, rearset pegs and low clip-on bars, making for a much more aggressive, low-slung riding position and, indeed, a very different-looking bike than its INT brother. Other than the contact points though, the spec sheet remains very similar for both, with a 41mm fork up front, twin coilover shocks out back, a six-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch, 18-inch wheels, and Bosch dual-channel ABS as standard equipment. If doing the ton in style is your game, the GT should be on your list.

New to the Harley club? The standard-ish 2020 Harley-Davidson Street 750 just might be the easiest way in. One of the most affordable entry points to the Harley-Davidson family gives you a liquid-cooled 750cc V-twin engine, easy handling, and sleek styling that’ll hit the spot for commuters and riders on a budget. The Street 750 has seen only minor improvements and refinements since its launch in 2014, but it has become a solid choice for newer riders and those ripping around the urban jungle as well as a welcome alternative to the usual big-bore V-twin models with an equally big price tag. If you’re looking for a relatively simple and understated Harley in your garage, this might be your Huckleberry. Our advice? Yamaha’s marketing brochures would have us believe the Bolt is an “urban performance bobber,” but it’s more like an obvious challenger to Harley’s class-dominating Sportster—not that there’s anything wrong with that. Whatever you want to call them, Yamaha’s budget-friendly, throttle-happy Bolt and Bolt R-Spec cruisers have found their niche in the urban bike category thanks to their compact, solid chassis, better than average suspension (on the R-Spec anyway), and torquey V-twin power. Both Bolts are built around a 942cc, air-cooled, 60-degree V-twin engine sporting electronic fuel injection and lightweight forged aluminum pistons designed to produce lots of usable power. The low saddle, short wheelbase, and compact feel make the Bolt a fave with shorter beginner and intermediate riders, though the bike is up to accommodating more advanced pilots as well. The bikes below came within a grand of our magic cutoff number, and most were in our $10,000 cruiser roundup (so check that one out too), and we’d be remiss if we didn’t at least mention these tried-and-true, full-size, well-reviewed machines. And since they’re a couple of years old at this point, you’ll be able to pick up used examples for much less than the MSRP—and presumably closer to our $8K target.

Harley’s smallest remaining Sportster has been going strong for more than a decade, due in large part to its price, looks, and appeal to a broad group of riders. The beauty of the 883 is that it offers even more of a blank canvas to do what you will, and decades of production have left the aftermarket stocked with thousands of options for it.

Indian’s Scout Sixty model takes the successful 1,132cc Scout cruiser, cuts it down to 1,000cc, and moves from a six- to a five-speed transmission. The bike’s size and styling are almost identical to the standard Scout, but a smaller engine and lower price point make the Sixty a bit more approachable. Pictured is the Scout Bobber Sixty, which brings more minimal styling but carries the same MSRP.

This Suzuki is a 2020 model, and despite its stodgy styling the Boulevard C50 offers a pretty bulletproof setup and remains a great value with its fuel-injected, torquey, 50ci V-twin engine. A spacious riding position and smooth suspension let you cruise comfortably, while its rear suspension is hidden to give the appearance of a classic hardtail.
