We reported on the winner of Harley’s recent King of Kings contest a while back, but there was another entry in the build-off that caught our eye too, and even snagged its own shout-out. The 1995 Evo-based Sportster custom named The Emperor comes from the H-D Thunderbike dealer and custom shop in Niederrhein Germany, which is no stranger to the V-twin custom world. Although The Emperor didn’t snag the coveted grand prize in the contest, it got a special commendation from the big dogs at H-D, specifically Brad Richards, VP of Styling and Design at Harley-Davidson, who named it as the H-D Styling Team Pick. Hell, If that’s not pat on the back, we don’t know what is.

© Ben Ott/Thunderbike Harley-Davidson The rules in this King of Kings competition stipulated that the main frame couldn’t be tweaked and the swingarm had to be fully functional. Check and check. The 2020 King of Kings finale was meant to highlight the fact that the iconic Sportster is one of the easiest vehicles in Harley’s range to customize. And even though The Emperor was built mainly from scratch, with a wealth of handmade parts, it shows that capability to the nth degree, with a meticulous, painstaking level of attention to even the smallest details like the muffler end caps, the in-house-designed gearshift lever and hand-shaped, rubber-mounted oil tank.
