Jack Miller had been in the sights of Ducati, this is nothing new. The formalization of an agreement arrived Wednesday, May 27. Miller will ride for the Ducati factory team in 2021 with an option for the team to extend his stay by a further year.

By signing the 25-year-old from Townsville, Australia, the Italian factory bets once again on an Australian talent, continuing a successful tradition with three-time SBK world champion Troy Bayliss, who brought the Desmosedici to its debut in 2003, and Casey Stoner, who won the MotoGP title in 2007.

Miller opens a new chapter in Ducati’s history. He showed an impressive progression in 2019, but is he the right choice for Ducati? Jack was an exciting, if unpredictable talent, missing the 2014 Moto3 crown by just two points to Álex Márquez. The Australian’s raw talent convinced Honda to sign him on a three-year deal to move directly up to MotoGP for 2015 with the LCR squad aboard the underpowered RC213V-RS. The big leap was not painless. Results were hard to achieve, and Miller had gained a negative reputation in the paddock for his demeanor on and off the bike. He finally joined the Ducati Pramac team in 2018 (already with one impressive victory at Assen under his belt) and he finished 2019 in eighth with five podium finishes.

The Australian can be a surprise contender, especially after the consistency shown last year. In the team run by Paolo Campinoti, Miller found the right balance—but the factory team is another story.

But hit the 7,000 rpm mark, and you’ll witness the V4 in all its glory as it lofts the front end skyward and sends your glutes into the rear cowling under hard acceleration.”Sign up here to receive our newsletters.

Negotiations between Ducati and Miller about a factory ride come at a time when Andrea Dovizioso's future at the squad is unclear. KTM boss Pit Beirer dampened speculation of a switch to the Austrian manufacturer for Dovizioso when he stated it was his intention to re- sign all four of its existing riders

Andrea Dovizioso knows the story well. He joined Ducati in 2013 and he had to cement his status inside the team on the track. He had to swallow some bitter morsels, starting with the different treatment with his teammate Jorge Lorenzo—like his $1.5M per year salary versus the Spaniard’s $12.5M). Finishing runner-up three times and being Márquez’s title contender don’t seem to be enough to convince Ducati to renew him. This winter Ducati was close to signing with Yamaha rider Maverick Viñales, and Dovizioso hasn't received an offer yet.

“Our target is to line up Dovizioso and Miller,” stated Paolo Ciabatti, Ducati Sports Director. “The negotiation with Jack was really quick. We were also his priority, so it was easy to find an agreement. Despite his young age, Jack has a lot of experience in MotoGP. We believe that he is ready for the factory team. Things are a bit more complicated with Dovizioso. We started talking some weeks ago.”

Jack Miller has been announced as joining the factory Ducati MotoGP team for 2021, confirming widely-reported speculation that he would be stepping up from satellite team Pramac Ducati to the Bologna manufacturer’s number one squad. Miller will only have one confirmed season with the team

The biggest obstacle is mainly economic. The pandemic crisis has changed the whole scenario on a global scale but especially in Italy, where the lockdown lasted almost two months during the hottest period for the bike market. According to Ciabatti, “Selling bikes is very linked with the seasons. The lockdown and the crisis had and will continue to have a strong impact on the budgets!”

The almost $6M that Dovizioso is currently getting and that was offered this winter to Yamaha rider Viñales are no longer there. Andrea is thus forced to give up a substantial part of his current salary in order to renew with the Italian brand.

“The company has been closed for almost two months, the whole world has changed since the outbreak of the virus,” Ciabatti continued. “The numbers before the pandemic are no longer valid. We had to review the budget for the current and the coming seasons. We will need some time to find an agreement because we are starting from different numbers.”

Is Ducati ready for a plan B? “Not at the moment as we are confident to sign with Andrea. He is very motivated, and he wants to continue racing,” Ciabatti stated. “If this shouldn’t happen, there won’t be any rush. We will wait the first rounds of the championship (that should restart on July 19 in Jerez, Spain) to evaluate the performance of the Ducati riders like Danilo Petrucci, Pecco Bagnaia, or Johann Zarco. And who knows if we could end up signing Dovi anyway?”

The seats that matter are now almost all occupied. Yamaha signed the wonder duo of Maverick Viñales and Fabio Quartararo while Suzuki renewed Álex Rins and Joan Mir. Honda has secured Marc Márquez for another four years, and is predicted to confirm his brother Álex. KTM should announce the signing of Pol Espargaró and rookie Brad Binder, while Aprilia is waiting for the final verdict of Andrea Iannone (suspended until June 2021 for doping but waiting an appeal ruling). The Petronas Yamaha satellite team is waiting for Valentino Rossi’s decision, while they seem very open to renew VR46 Academy rider Franco Morbidelli.

With this scenario, Dovizioso has not much choice. In a similar position is his current teammate Danilo Petrucci, who could join Aprilia MotoGP or continue with Ducati in the World Superbike championship. Danilo’s brilliant win at Mugello and his good first part of the 2019 year, in fact, were not enough to secure him a seat in Ducati for the 2021–’22 seasons.
