The Most Significant Coronavirus fears shut down the show, but automakers debuted these viral rides anyway. But even without a physical venue, the show must—and did—go on. Many new cars that were set to make their debut at the Geneva auto show were still revealed digitally online, and some automakers even put on virtual press conferences live-streamed to the web. Geneva has historically been the show where automakers debut their fastest, most exclusive, most high-tech, [insert any other relevant superlatives here] new production models and concept cars, and this year's remote event was no exception.

Shane McElrath claimed his third feature race victory of the season in the first-ever Wednesday night Monster Energy AMA Supercross race at round 12 of the series inside the Utah Ute’s Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. The Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha rider began the evening by winning his heat race and later on, put his YZ250F in second place off the start in the main event behind his teammate Colt Nichols. Six laps of the race elapsed before McElrath passed his Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha stablemate and led the final 14 laps to take his fourth consecutive victory at the Rice-Eccles Stadium venue. With his win, McElrath now sits tied for the point lead with championship rival Chase Sexton.

“Man, it was a great day for the team!” McElrath exclaimed. “It was a tough race. The track crew built a technical track and it was physically demanding, but I’m super excited and thankful to do my best out there and tonight that was the top step. It’s cool to get back-to-back wins and I’m really excited about it, but right now my focus is on Sunday.”

In his second race back from a shoulder injury that sidelined him in the beginning of the season, Nichols holeshotted the main event, led laps, and after being passed by McElrath, held onto second place until the checkered flag flew to capture the runner-up spot for the evening.

“It was a really great night for the team, exactly what we needed to do,” Nichols remarked. “I wish I could’ve held the lead a little longer, but it was awesome to lead laps and be back on the podium after such a long break from racing. I had a blast during the night program. It felt like another day at the test track with Shane [McElrath] in that main event, so that made it really fun. I’m ready to go again Sunday.”

After winning his heat race in dominating fashion, disaster struck for Chase Sexton approximately one minute into the main event when he washed the front end and went down in the right-hand corner after the finish line. The Geico Honda rider lost more time in the incident when Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM’s Pierce Brown had nowhere to go, ran into Sexton’s back, and became briefly stuck atop his bike. After Sexton untangled himself and remounted his CRF250R, he had fallen back to 17th, but he passed 13 riders in the remainder of the race to salvage a fourth place result.

That was a great battle and a lot of fun. The track had some great character and it was just a great day for the Monster Energy Kawasaki team.

“I just washed the front and that’s about it,” Sexton said. “I came from pretty much dead last; that’s all I could do. We’re going to have to be better and get ready for Sunday.”

“My start in the main didn’t do me any favors trying to get up to the front,” Marchbanks said. “I was way back and had to manage to get through the pack. I’m thankful that we were able to get through pretty quickly, but the pace at the front is really high and if you’re not there at the start, it’s hard to close the gap. Everything else feels great. I just need to get up there so I can challenge those guys from the start. We get another try in a few days [on Sunday].”

2020 Salt Lake City 7 Supercross 450 Class Race Report“This is just so cool to win my first 450SX title,” Tomac said. “This championship is literally the last carrot that I was chasing, especially after coming up short for the past three years. I have worked so hard for this and can’t thank the Monster Energy Kawasaki team and entire company enough for all of their support and for helping me finally achieve this goal for myself and everyone who is a part of this program. It has been a long time coming and we set ourselves up for success starting from day one of this series and just kept fighting till the end.
