  The Most Significant Coronavirus fears shut down the show, but automakers debuted these viral rides anyway.But even without a physical venue, the show must—and did—go on. Many new cars that were set to make their debut at the Geneva auto show were still revealed digitally online, and some automakers even put on virtual press conferences live-streamed to the web. Geneva has historically been the show where automakers debut their fastest, most exclusive, most high-tech, [insert any other relevant superlatives here] new production models and concept cars, and this year's remote event was no exception.

In addition to releasing information about its MY21 motocross bikes, which includes an updated KX450 and all-new KX250, Kawasaki has added two new cross-country models to its KX lineup for 2021. The Japanese manufacturer’s flagship motocrosser, the KX450, features a new coned disc-spring hydraulic clutch, which is said to provide a lighter clutch actuation and a wider clutch engagement range. Larger-diameter clutch plates with a revised friction material are designed to provide a consistent feeling through minimal change in play as the clutch heats up during heavy use. The friction plates feature offset segments to help promote clean separation of the discs and reduce drag when the clutch is pulled in.

Also, the KX450′s piston skirt utilizes a new dry film lubricant coating to reduce friction between the piston and cylinder wall. The final change made to Kawasaki’s flagship motocrosser for 2021 is the addition of a new Renthal Fatbar handlebar, which is 1-1/8 inches in diameter and said to be a lower bend than the prior model’s Renthal 971-bend 7/8-inch handlebar. The suggested retail price of the 2021 Kawasaki KX450 is $9,399.

The smaller of Kawasaki’s two full-size motocross models, the KX250 is all-new for 2021 with engine, suspension, and chassis updates. Although the internals of the KX250 powerplant were significantly changed last year, the quarter-liter KX engine returns for 2021 with the addition of electric start, which is powered by a lithium-ion battery, along with a coned disc-spring hydraulic clutch, a lighter crankshaft, 3mm longer connecting rod, different combustion chamber design, and a flatter piston crown. Also, the exhaust cam timing has been retarded by 3 degrees, the valve springs are stiffer, the intake and exhaust ports have altered processing with a larger-diameter angle, and the pressure balance inside the crankcase has been revised. Lastly, according to Kawasaki, the 2021 KX250 engine’s rev limit has been increased by 350 rpm over the prior year model.

In the chassis department, the KX250′s new aluminum perimeter frame’s steering head area, main frame rails with updated cross-sections, line for the swingarm brackets, and wider lower frame rails have all been revised and contribute to the overall rigidity balance. The frame is based off the 2019–2021 Kawasaki KX450′s, but differs in areas such as the shock tower mount. The engine hangers were also designed specifically for the needs of the smaller-bore bike.

Using the engine as a stressed member adds to the frame’s rigidity balance. The addition of a KX450 swingarm is designed to deliver the rigidity necessary to match the frame and is also said to help increase traction at the rear wheel.

2021 marks the second consecutive year of the KX250 using a KYB 48mm coil-spring fork and KYB shock, both of which feature new settings for MY21. The bike’s lower triple clamp has been revised for optimized rigidity and reduced weight, while the linkage ratios have been changed and are now the same as those found on the KX450. The front and rear brake also enjoy updates for 2021 in the form of a new front master cylinder like the one on the KX450 as well as a new Braking 240mm rear disc, which is 10mm smaller than the unit found on the prior year model. The final updates made to the KX250 for 2021 include new bodywork, slimmer radiator shrouds, a flatter design at the top of the fuel tank, a new Renthal Fatbar, smoother engine covers, and a gold finish on the oil cap and ignition cover plugs. The suggested retail price of the 2021 Kawasaki KX250 is $500 more than the prior year model at $8,299.

Kawasaki has entered the cross-country motorcycle market with its KX250XC and KX450XC. Both machines are based on the motocross models of the same displacement, sharing the same engine, frame, chassis, and styling as their MX-focused counterparts, but feature cross-country-specific settings and components such as off-road-optimized engine and suspension settings, XC-specific brake pads, an 18-inch rear wheel, Dunlop Geomax AT81 tires, a skid plate, and kickstand. Both of Kawasaki’s new off-road bikes also have a one-tooth-larger rear sprocket than their motocross counterparts, giving them a final drive ratio of 13/51. While the KX450 motocrosser is spec’d with a larger 250mm rear brake disc, the KX450XC uses a 240mm rotor, as does the KX250XC. The suggested retail price of the 2021 Kawasaki KX250XC is $8,399, while the KX450XC is $9,599. Both models will be available in summer 2020.

Under the guidance of 10-time AMA National Trials champion Geoff Aaron, who serves as GasGas North America’s Off-Road Race Team manager, the brand will continue with its factory trials team and will also work with the GasGas Coastal Factory Racing Team and their team manager Barry Hawk as they prepare to contest the Grand National Cross-Country (GNCC) and Kenda AMA National Enduro series in 2021.
