In the chassis department, the KX250′s new aluminum perimeter frame’s steering head area, main frame rails with updated cross-sections, line for the swingarm brackets, and wider lower frame rails have all been revised and contribute to the overall rigidity balance. The frame is based off the 2019–2021 Kawasaki KX450′s, but differs in areas such as the shock tower mount. The engine hangers were also designed specifically for the needs of the smaller-bore bike.
Using the engine as a stressed member adds to the frame’s rigidity balance. The addition of a KX450 swingarm is designed to deliver the rigidity necessary to match the frame and is also said to help increase traction at the rear wheel.
2021 marks the second consecutive year of the KX250 using a KYB 48mm coil-spring fork and KYB shock, both of which feature new settings for MY21. The bike’s lower triple clamp has been revised for optimized rigidity and reduced weight, while the linkage ratios have been changed and are now the same as those found on the KX450. The front and rear brake also enjoy updates for 2021 in the form of a new front master cylinder like the one on the KX450 as well as a new Braking 240mm rear disc, which is 10mm smaller than the unit found on the prior year model. The final updates made to the KX250 for 2021 include new bodywork, slimmer radiator shrouds, a flatter design at the top of the fuel tank, a new Renthal Fatbar, smoother engine covers, and a gold finish on the oil cap and ignition cover plugs. Both machines are based on the motocross models of the same displacement, sharing the same engine, frame, chassis, and styling as their MX-focused counterparts, but feature cross-country-specific settings and components such as off-road-optimized engine and suspension settings, XC-specific brake pads, an 18-inch rear wheel, Dunlop Geomax AT81 tires, a skid plate, and kickstand. Both of Kawasaki’s new off-road bikes also have a one-tooth-larger rear sprocket than their motocross counterparts, giving them a final drive ratio of 13/51. While the KX450 motocrosser is spec’d with a larger 250mm rear brake disc, the KX450XC uses a 240mm rotor, as does the KX250XC.
