Motorcycles And Their Boundary Layers .
Motorcycles And Their Boundary LayersThis is of value during combustion in the engine’s cylinders because the insulating effect of the stagnant layer reduces heat loss from combustion gas to the piston and combustion chamber. If the abnormal, sonic-speed form of combustion known as detonation (aka “engine knock”) begins to occur, that boundary layer is physically blown away by shock waves, allowing engine parts to heat up much more rapidly. This leads to erosion of metal surfaces, damage to piston ring sealing, and perhaps seizure from excessive piston thermal expansion.
