The Most Significant "Debuts" of the Canceled 2020 Geneva Auto Show

The Most Significant Coronavirus fears shut down the show, but automakers debuted these viral rides anyway. But even without a physical venue, the show must—and did—go on. Many new cars that were set to make their debut at the Geneva auto show were still revealed digitally online, and some automakers even put on virtual press conferences live-streamed to the web. Geneva has historically been the show where automakers debut their fastest, most exclusive, most high-tech, [insert any other relevant superlatives here] new production models and concept cars, and this year's remote event was no exception.

Kawasaki has ruled the roost for years with its competition-spec two-stroke and now four-stroke motocross bikes. Now after years of missing out on the red-hot off-road segment to its European and Japanese foes, it enters this race with the 2021 KX250XC and KX450XC.

Both motorcycles are based off Team Green’s recently overhauled motocross machines, the KX250 and KX450, and include electric start and hydraulic clutch mechanisms. The “XC” designation substitutes a few key components designed for the rigors of roosting across the desert and through the woods. These motorcycles are not street-legal.

2020 Kawasaki Z900 First Ride Review

2020 Kawasaki Z900 First Ride Review 2020 Kawasaki Z900 First Ride ReviewThe overall feel of the Z900 has come a long way from 2019 with the addition of switchable traction control, independently selectable power modes, four ride modes, and the 4.3-inch full-color TFT through which it’s all controlled. For a price increase of $600, the added safety, comfort, and performance benefits are significant. The more time I spent on the bike, the more impressed I was with both the motorcycle and its price tag.

Lower final drive gearing enhances these bikes' capability over technical terrain, and a plastic skid plate shields the powertrain from logs and other obstacles encountered on trail.

Off-road-specific suspension calibration with lighter springs and faster damping make these XC machines more friendly to ride in the rough stuff. A more forgiving 18-inch rear wheel, shod with Dunlop’s gummy Geomax AT81 tires complement things. A kickstand supports the motorcycle when you’re not riding.

The brakes are also said to be specifically developed for the rigors of open desert and woods riding featuring a slightly smaller front brake disc and cross-country riding specific brake pad material. Both motorcycles will be available for sale later this summer.

2021 BMW 5-Series First Look: Five for Fighting

2021 BMW 5-Series First Look: Five for Fighting 2021 BMW 5-Series First Look: Five for FightingThe entire 5-Series lineup undergoes a thorough makeover for the 2021 model year. The most obvious changes are to its bodywork. The grille, unsurprisingly, swells slightly—now wider and taller than before. The design of the car's standard LED headlights now brings its looks in line with those of the smaller 3-Series. All 5-Series models get new taillights and tailpipes, too.

Unlike some of its competitors in the class, neither motorcycle offers a warranty, however Kawasaki has a strong US dealer network and the build quality of its machinery has elevated substantially over the last decade.
