One Week With the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit

One Week With the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit It’s been about 10 years since the current Jeep Grand Cherokee was launched, and though that’s ancient in automotive terms, Jeep has done much to keep its flagship Grand Cherokee current. Throughout the years, the midsize SUV has received plenty of upgrades; from new engines to new trims, the Grand Cherokee is taking good care of itself. Its lineup is so extensive that there's pretty much a Grand Cherokee for everyone. From the wallet-friendly Laredo to the Hellcat-powered and performance-oriented Trackhawk, Jeep has the two-row midsize SUV game well covered.

Serious crashes gave everyone a scare and much to think about, but Andrea Dovizioso, who announced during practice his decision to leave Ducati at the end of this year, then won going away on this fast racetrack. He and his team had intensively studied the data and came up with a setup that, while far from perfect, was adequate for the win.

A red flag at nine laps and a 20-lap restart resulted from a 200-mph contact between Johann Zarco’s Ducati and Franco Morbidelli’s Yamaha, both braking. Morbi’s front wheel appeared to touch Zarco’s rear tire. The two bikes flew on, shedding parts—the Yamaha passing between Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales, miraculously touching neither. Zarco’s Ducati hit a barrier, shattering its rear wheel, and flew on, again narrowly missing the Yamaha factory riders. Both downed riders were able to walk away. Those who wish to wrangle over possible blame are welcome to do so.

Dovizioso, for some time in contract talks with Ducati, lost patience with what he termed a lack of respect from the other side, and announced his intention to leave the team. In the Red Bull-sponsored film _Undaunted_, Dovi is urged by management to “show more dash”—that is, to just go faster and accept higher risk. It’s hard to have a discussion on such a basis for it suggests that his critics have no understanding of what racers do. When a rider goes faster, that shows that either he/she has learned something new, or a change in bike, tires, or setup has resulted in increased confidence and control. Riders do not go faster by “trying harder” (suggesting comic scenes of constipation).

The stopwatch provides clarity. When a rider laps at a comfortably fast pace, lap times are consistent because no mistakes are having to be “gathered up,” which takes time. As the rider pushes on, lap times come down but small inconsistencies appear. These are the increments of time lost in the small mistakes that begin to appear when the pace quickens.

As the rider goes faster yet, accepting increased risk, larger mistakes appear and lap times become quite irregular. This is the condition in which a rider may report something like, “That lap I closed the front in T3 and went wide, so that lap was a loss.” If for some reason the rider pushes yet more, eventually a mistake is made serious enough to cause a fall. This is why my heart sinks when I hear a rider say, “Next practice I’m going to have to ride harder.” The most dangerous thing a rider can do is to try to win on a bike that is almost fast enough.

The first three races of this season have featured unusually high track temperatures, many observations by riders that behavior of the new 2020 Michelin rear tire is difficult or impossible to understand, and crashes. For Austria, Michelin announced that in view of the “huge stresses and heat buildup that the…tires will have to contend with…Michelin has a special rear tire construction, designed specifically for these conditions. The use of these tires will mean that the new (2020) rear construction, with its improved grip and performance that has been so successful so far this season, won’t be used at Spielberg.”

The weekend in Austria was complicated by rain in FP2. The possibility of rain on Sunday had to be considered, and the shortened practice made it difficult to both evaluate tire choices and accumulate enough laps on a single set of the chosen combination to have some understanding of whether or not it was capable of maintaining a useful lap time to the end of the event.

Rossi observed in practice that here, “It’s particularly important to be strong in braking so you need to balance the bike especially for that.”

FP1 was topped by Pol Espargaró on the suddenly very competitive KTM (on which Brad Binder won at Brno last weekend). Espargaró said, “Looking this morning behind Dovi I am just missing this top speed, and this is what they really have as their strong point.

“[the Ducatis] work well exiting from the corners. They catch the grip very good and they manage the anti-wheelie [well] with electronics.

“This is something that maybe we are missing—this acceleration.”

KTM Motorsports Director Pit Beirer spoke of the changes that have brought its bike to top level: “The package has always been strong on the brakes, getting into the corner, but our riders were not able to hold the lines and they were picking up the bike too late.”

This is the middle phase of cornering, when side grip is all-important. If a bike doesn’t turn well, the rider must remain at a high lean angle longer to get turned, which allows the competition to begin acceleration sooner.

Beirer continued, “The breakthrough this year has been improving the cornering. Now our guys are finally able to do the same line [as the competition].”

This can be a result of incorrect front/rear balance (which is why modern GP bikes have big steering-head “pots” with enough room inside them to allow several millimeters of forward or aft adjustment of the steering axis) or it can also result from a chassis too stiff to stay in contact with rough surfaces when at high lean angle. On this latter point there have been comments that the necessary flex cannot be obtained with other than the usual MotoGP twin aluminum beam chassis. I suspect some of this arises from riders’ experience with the bicycles widely used for training. In bicycling, steel chassis are regarded as flexible and comfortable, whereas the large-diameter, thin-walled tubing often used to build aluminum bicycle frames displays high stiffness, not because aluminum is stiffer than steel (it is only one-third as stiff as steel) but because structural stiffness increases rapidly with tube diameter.

Ducati was able to win the MotoGP championship in 2007 with a welded steel tube chassis and KTM continues to use such a structure. Provided that the correct lateral chassis flexibility is achieved, why should it matter whether the material providing that flex is steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, or even plywood? (I’ve always been curious about a plywood chassis because Head Ski was able to overcome chatter in its metal skis by including the damping effect of some wood in their laminate,)

Dovi was consistently highly placed in the practices, being second in FP1 and third in both FP3 and FP4. But there was Pol Espargaró on KTM, topping both FP1 and FP4. As has been the case in previous races, times are terribly close and missing a tenth can send your “ratings” tumbling.

When the race started no one was surprised to see that the order after one lap was Jack Miller and Dovi on Ducati, Pol Espargaró third on KTM, then the “corner-speed club” of Joan Mir on Suzuki, then Viñales, Fabio Quartararo, and Morbidelli on top-speed-deficient but otherwise fast Yamahas.

The Zarco/Morbidelli crash on lap 9 brought a red flag and prompt restart. Aside from the usual start action, Miller came through first on lap 1 and remained there for nine laps, then was passed by Dovi who remained first until the end. Álex Rins was “in among ‘em” and even led briefly, but was clearly working very hard to keep position as he was pushing into loss of front grip. Dovi and Rins got past Miller to become 1-2, but at T6 Rins lost the front in trying an inside pass on Dovizioso. Down and out.

At the end it was Dovi, Mir, Miller, and Brno winner Brad Binder fourth (having started a dismal 17th!). Who could it be in fifth? None other than the surprising Valentino Rossi, 41 years of age and yet somehow first Yamaha.

KTM is still benefiting from the concessions offered under the rules to teams that have not had recent success. Its riders are allowed nine rather than five engines each for the season, and those engines can be upgraded in season. Also those teams are allowed to test at any time, at any desired track. On the basis of three points for a win, two points for second, and one for third, when a team having concessions accumulates six points over two years, the unlimited testing is withdrawn, and the following year the engine allotment is cut from nine to seven.

Viñales, well-placed in race 1, suffered clutch slip after the restart but later recovered to finish 10th. Again he faced mysteries: “Only in practice and qualifying can I give my best, because something always happens in the race.

“Yesterday [Saturday] the bike was perfect, today it was difficult to ride.

Miller had been second until a small mistake let Mir past for second: “…in the final lap I made a small mistake. I thought Joan was a lot closer so I rode defensively.

“…then I made that mistake and finished third.”

Pol Espargaró, out on lap 9 (contact with Miguel Oliviera—both men fell) after being in the lead group, said, “I was really fast in the first race. So much so that I felt I could break away. But once the race was interrupted I realized I didn’t have another new medium tire for the rear…”

“With the soft I lost all my braking potential, which is my strongest point, and I struggled to repeat the times of the first race. I made many mistakes.”

2021 BMW M 1000 RR First Look Preview BMW shows off an M-badged S 1000 RR superbike.“Our standard double R is a sign of real superiority—both in near-series motorsports and on the road,” says the M 1000 RR Overall Vehicle Development manager, Stephan Loistl. “With the M RR we have managed to go one better in every single discipline. It is lighter, faster, simply consistently trimmed for performance—which you can feel from the first meter.

Binder, fourth, said, “Starting 17th, our expectations were almost nothing, so to finish in the top five was great and I learned a lot in the race. I had the opportunity to go behind some of the fast guys and I know now that I can make…improvements next week [the Styrian GP, on this same track].

“Hopefully we can make a step forward next week.”

Dovi, despite winning the race and announcing he’s leaving Ducati, never stops his detailed thinking process.

“I have improved in braking but now we have to do it in the middle of the corner and in the first part of acceleration if we want to fight with the Yamaha and the Suzuki on the other tracks.”

Danilo Petrucci, also on Ducati, noted, “I have always been one of the riders who used more rear tire in braking and we do not know why it is impossible to use this style this year. So I’m constantly changing the engine-braking settings to deal with this problem.”

Racing is changing. Younger men are maturing and the lap times of nearly all riders have become closer. KTM and Suzuki are fully competitive and KTM won last weekend at Brno. Experience still counts—Dovi’s win and Rossi’s fifth place make that clear—but new forces are at work.

Will Dovi and Ducati remain on the outs? Without that, pundits are suggesting the only likely opening for him in 2021 would be Aprilia.

The points race is this:

1

Fabio Quartararo Yamaha 67
2 Andrea Dovizioso Ducati 56
3 Maverick Viñales Yamaha 48
4 Brad Binder KTM 41
5 Valentino Rossi Yamaha 38

Every rider who has had success this year is automatically quizzed about how he feels about his chance of being champion. At this point in the season, with Marc Márquez still out with injuries and many races to go, the only possible answer is, “I have no idea.”
