Lin Jarvis explains why the new Valentino Rossi contract has been a long time coming - and why the contract is only valid for 2021
For weeks it has been clear that Valentino Rossi will ride for Petronas-Yamaha in 2021. Even so, it took a long time for the contract to be finished and signed. As part of the Grand Prix in Barcelonaon Saturday.
"We signed the contract about 17 minutes before the press release went out," laughs Yamaha manager Lin Jarvis. "Valentino reminded me that it took eight months."
At the end of January, Yamaha announced that they would rely on Fabio Quartararo and Maverick Vinales in the factory team in 2021/22. Rossi wanted to offer Quartararos space at Petronas. Work has been going on on the contract since Rossi made his personal decision that he wanted to continue.

From all sides it was always emphasized that one is in no hurry because one was in principle agreed. "I am very happy that everything is done. The final contract is relatively thin because it is actually an extension of the previous contract," says Jarvis.
"It was complicated because we are a Japanese company. We had to make a deal with a team from Malaysia and the Italians. And an Englishman tried to sort out all the details. There were no difficulties, but it was complicated because he is not a normal driver. "
"With a normal driver you can close deals very quickly. But with someone like Valentino Rossi you have to be very precise about technical support, team staff and image rights. Every aspect is involved."
"These things take time if you want to do them well. We have now achieved this goal and I am very happy," says Jarvis. In the past few years the contract was only between Yamaha and Rossi. This was easy, especially with contract extensions, as only details had to be changed.

contracts with Dorna and Sepang-Racing as sticking points
Rossi still has a contract with Yamaha. This contract was then extended with the Petronas team so that he can drive there. That made things more complicated. In addition, Rossi Razlan wanted to invite Razali and Co. between the two Misano races.
The contract is only valid for the 2021 season. There is no extension option. "When you sign a contract, you can only write something in it that you can implement," says Jarvis in relation to this.
Yamaha has not yet signed a new contract with MotoGP promoter Dorna for the period 2022 to 2026. The contract between Sepang-Racing and Yamaha is only valid until the end of 2021. Therefore, it was not legally possible to offer Rossi something for 2022.

Valentino Rossi Interview After Jerez MotoGP Podium
Valentino Rossi Interview After Jerez MotoGP PodiumCan you imagine his feeling when the numbers began to go against him? Last year Rossi stepped on the podium only twice (in Argentina and Texas), while his teammate, 25-year-old Maverick Viñales, scored two wins and a second place, and 21-year-old Fabio Quartararo scored five podiums in 2019 and two victories in a row this year.
"Personally, I have no doubt that we will be there from 2022 to 2026, but I don't have one Contract, "says Jarvis. "You can only make a contract for something that you can guarantee. That is the main reason."
"Also, Valentino wants to assess whether he is competitive every year. He wanted to wait a few races this year and then assess his situation. Our contract is very, very clear that we intend to go through halfway next season a possible extension to speak. "
Then why do Quartararo and Vinales have contracts for 2022? "As I said, I have no doubt that we will be there from 2022 to 2026. That is why our top management can confirm our factory drivers," explains Jarvis. "But we can't confirm a third driver if you don't have a satellite team. Only when that is confirmed can you write it in a contract."
