Yamaha triple peak in the morning in Aragon: Maverick Vinales finished the first free practice of MotoGP in Aragon with a best time of 1: 49.866 minutes at the top, the Petroans duo Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Quartararo completed the top 3. Vinales and Morbidelli were the only drivers under 1:50.

Because of the low track temperatures, which were hardly in double digits in the morning, the start of training was postponed by half an hour. Instead of 9:55 a.m., the session started at 10:25 a.m.

For the cooler conditions, Michelin provides drivers from the Aragon with one more soft front tire . This gives you six instead of five front tires of the softest compound for the weekend. In addition, the rubber is a little softer than usual in both the soft and the medium, as Piero Taramasso from Michelin revealed.

Aragon weekend without Valentino Rossi

For the start of the session, all drivers opted for the soft front tires, with the exception of Stefan Bradl (Honda) all had the medium compound on the rear.

Valentino Rossi did not take to the track in the morning and will also be absent for the rest of the weekend. The Yamaha rider tested positive for the coronavirus and is in quarantine at home in Tavullia. There is a short-term replacement for the Italian. Also in Aragon 2 he will probably be missing and will not be replaced.

After ten minutes, Johann Zarco caused the first moment of shock in training. At turn 14, the front wheel fell away on the brakes and the Avintia rider shot towards the gravel bed just like his Ducati. Luckily he wasn't injured.

Shortly afterwards, Yamaha rider Vinales blocked the front wheel at the same point, but he was able to start a fall. Alex Marquez couldn't do that at Turn 2. In the first right after a series of left turns, the Honda rider slipped over the front wheel. His bike overturned several times.

Turns 2 and 14 remained the focus of the accident as the session continued: Iker Leucona (Tech-3-KTM) and Petronas driver Morbidelli also went down there in the last ten minutes.

Before that, Morbidelli had moved up to second place with a new personal best, underpinning Yamaha's strong form in the morning. Because the manufacturer has been claiming the top 3 in training since half-time and did not give up this triple lead until the end.

Two Hondas in the top 5, Ducati beaten

In the end, works driver Vinales had the lead with just 0.085 seconds ahead of Morbidelli. Quartararo was third, almost three tenths behind. However, he ended the session with a fall at Turn 8 that hit the tarmac hard.

Alex Marquez, who was a strong runner-up in the rain at Le Mans, finished the practice session in fourth place. He improved on his last flying lap with fresh tires. Honda brand colleague Takaaki Nakagami lined up behind him. He was already 0.554 seconds short of the Vinales session time.

The second half of the top 10 led Suzuki driver Joan Mir in sixth place. Pol Espagaro (KTM), Cal Crutchlow (LCR-Honda), Alex Rins (Suzuki) and Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia) followed in seventh to tenth place. The top 10 separated by just under a second.

The first free practice session for the Ducati drivers was disappointing. Jack Miller finished twelfth. The two works drivers Danilo Petrucci and Andrea Dovizioso couldn't get past places 15 and 17. "Desmo Dovi" was already one and a half seconds off the top. He was slower than Bradl in 14th place.
