Electric Vehicles are Too Damn Expensive

Electric Vehicles are Too Damn Expensive The average Josephine on the street can’t afford to step into most electric vehicles on sale in the U.S. today, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has admitted. “Our cars are not affordable enough,” Musk said during his second-quarter earnings call in July. “We need to fix that.” Electric cars and crossovers remain far too expensive to be daily commuters for the middle- and working-classes, who in congested urban areas, at least, may be turning to e-bikes instead, an electric segment in which U.S. sales spiked 92-percent in April and 137-percent in May, according to Bicycle Retailer and Industry News.

Round 1 of the 2020 Geico AMA EnduroCross series, hosted at famed Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California, saw Colton Haaker draw first blood in his quest to defend his title. In the three-race format, the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider put his FX 350 in third place off the start and worked his way into the lead on lap 2. After claiming the quickest lap time of the race on lap 5, Haaker went on to take a convincing win by beating his closest competitor by just under seven seconds at the finish line.

In the second race of the day, the starting positions were inverted from the first race results, which put the three-time champ on the second row. After coming together with another rider on the opening lap, Haaker worked his way from last place up to third by the conclusion of the race. With a third place gate pick in the final race, Haaker grabbed the holeshot, led the entirety of it, and took the checkers 7.4 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, earning him the overall win.

“First off, I am really happy to be back racing and grateful that the EnduroCross series was able to put this together for us,” Haaker said. “It’s nice to be racing, and to come away from the first race with a win is definitely a positive. I’m looking forward to keeping the momentum going tomorrow.”

In his debut AMA EnduroCross race with the FactoryOne Sherco effort, Cody Webb piloted his SE-F 300 Factory a runner-up finish with consistent 2-2-2 moto scores. Webb switched from his usual two-stroke to the four-stroke model shortly before the series, which was probably a good idea considering how jumpy the course was.

“It felt good to be back,” Webb said. “I missed all of last year, so I was nervous coming into this series with a new bike. We also planned to race the two-stroke and just decided to switch to the Sherco 300 four-stroke a few weeks ago. The team and the bike performed really well and I think I can improve from here.”

Cooper Abbott captured his first race win in the Super class at EnduroCross in the second race. Fourth place results in the other two races put the FMF/Maxxis/RPM/KTM Racing Team rider on the overall podium for the first time as well.

FMF KTM Factory Racing’s Trystan Hart began his day by capturing the fastest time in the Hot Lap portion of the program. The Canadian racer rounded out the podium on his 350 EXC-F in the first and final moto, but an eighth place result in the second race put him back to fourth overall.

“It was a tough night for me,” Hart said. “I got the fastest Hot Lap and from there it kind of went downhill. I had good speed to run up front tonight, but crashes kept me from reaching my full potential. I’m excited to hit the restart button and try again tomorrow.”

2020 Glen Helen 2 EnduroCross Race Report

2020 Glen Helen 2 EnduroCross Race Report Colton Haaker extends point lead with second victory of the season.“I had a huge crash in practice because my holeshot device didn’t release, then I crashed during the Hot Lap, but still managed a fifth place,” Haaker remarked. “The first race was going good, but I got taken out trying to lap Wally Palmer, so I dropped back to third. The second race was much better as I worked my way into the lead and did my thing to the end. And then the holeshot in the final moto helped me get the win. The red plate is heavy and defending the title is heavy, but I am happy to get off to a great start to the season.

Trystan Hart claims second win while Colton Haaker clinches title.“I was pushing as hard as I felt like I needed to on an oversaturated track,” Haaker explained. “It was really wet in the first moto, so I took it easy and let the race come to me and finished third. I ultimately finished third in each moto, but each race I got more comfortable with being in the position I was in. You just had to be smart out there. This year was really tough for me. I had a bulged disc in my back at round 2 and since then I’ve been fighting it really hard, but I’m happy to come away with my fourth title.
