The freedom of motocamping, especially now, is a sweet release Kyle SmithAfter being cooped up in my garage for six months, I was itching for a good opportunity to pack my saddlebags, hop on a motorcycle, and ride anywhere but the grocery store. A plan began to form over a few beers during a Zoom happy hour with a few friends. BGR Moto builds and sells TM Racing motorcycles in the United States. Currently, it is specializing in the 144cc two-stroke enduro, 300cc two-stroke enduro, and 300cc four-stroke enduro models. All three machines are offered in two different configurations. One is softer-sprung and -valved for a smaller or female rider and the other is a stiffer version for a heavier or taller male rider. In total, there are six different BGR Moto TM special edition bikes available. You can think of BGR Moto being to TM Racing USA as AMG is to Mercedes-Benz.

Brian Geddis is the founder of BGR Moto and has been involved in off-road motorcycling his entire life. He began by competing in motocross at a top level and transitioned into engineering after his professional racing career was over. Following the spirit of John Penton, his goal is to build the best bike that will allow every rider to enjoy off-road riding. Generally, dirt bikes are built as “one size fits all” trying to fit everyone with the same configuration. However, the truth is there are both men and women who love to ride, and we are all built differently with a variation in height, weight, and skill level. Now, BGR Moto has developed very specific packages that can help a 5-foot-tall, 100-pound woman feel as comfortable on a bike as a man who is 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds.

BGR Moto has teamed up with TM Racing USA to have bikes built with some specific settings and options direct from the TM factory in Italy. When it receives the bike in the US, it completes the most personal settings for the specific rider. This means the bikes are considered a factory model. Depending on the model you are interested in, you may have options such as a different gearbox, a CNC top triple clamp with silent blocks, a radiator fan, larger-capacity fuel tank, Öhlins shock, Reikon handlebar, different color plastic, and more. BGR Moto then takes your wish list, places the order with TM, and your custom bike is built. Once it arrives in the US, it gets to work on the remainder of the assembly that is tailored to your weight, height, and riding requirements.

The tailoring on the bike is not just a quick suspension spring swap. The folks at BGR will set the bike up with different suspension that can lower the bike more than 3 inches, customize the seat, remap the EFI, and install or remove lighting kits depending on if you plan to ride on paved roads or off-road only. They then finish it off with custom color plastic and a BGR Moto graphics kit.

Recently, Geddis offered us an opportunity to test one of the first 2021 TM EN 300 Fi ES two-stroke bikes to arrive in the country that BGR Moto had built. It was purchased for hard enduro and tight single-track riding, and the rider who bought it is on the shorter side and weighs in at 185 pounds. The motorcycle was ordered with a six-speed gearbox, 3.2-gallon gas tank, radiator fan kit, custom plastic kit with larger 300cc four-stroke shrouds, and a black rear section. An AXP skid plate was also added.

The overall seat-to-ground height was lowered roughly 2.5 inches.

The powerplant of the Italian machine is counterbalanced, has an electric starter, and features a pushrod servo system to the power valve to improve accuracy. The “Fi” in the model name means it has electronic fuel injection or, more specifically, TPI (Transfer Port Injection) with two injectors—one in each side of the cylinder transfer ports. A neat feature of the frame is the two-stroke oil is stored in the right-side spar and injected into the engine via an electric pump just after the throttle body. The 39mm throttle body is a case-reed design made in-house by TM Racing and the electronics that control the whole system are also by TM Racing.

This bike was ordered with the optional six-speed gearbox that offers an enduro low first gear, normal motocross-style second through fourth, and taller than usual fifth and sixth gears. If you want to adjust the final-drive ratio, TM Racing has front sprockets ranging from 12 to 14 teeth and rear sprockets in sizes from 38 to 52 teeth. Another feature of the EN 300 Fi ES two-stroke is its hydraulic clutch. The master cylinder is by Brembo and the slave cylinder is made by TM Racing. A quick-adjust lever puts your fingers in the right spot and it operates smoothly with a good engagement point.

The aluminum twin-spar frame is paired with a linkage-style swingarm design. The configuration of the two-stroke is fairly traditional in comparison to TM’s four-stroke models. The gas tank is up front and the airbox is behind the shock. The fork is a KYB 48mm coil-spring unit modified by BGR Moto and the shock is made by TM Racing. There is a standard compact combo switch on the handlebar that includes a turn signal, horn, and engine kill button. This is one of the items that is removable with the optional racing wire harness. The billet triple clamps are standard with a 23mm offset, and it also comes with rubber-mounted bar clamps that are reversible.

How Does BGR Moto’s 2021 TM EN 300 Fi ES 2T Ride?

Immediately, sitting on the bike I could feel it was much lower than I was expecting. Geddis set the sag for my weight and we were off. The counterbalanced engine on the EN 300 Fi ES might be the smoothest-running two-stroke I have ever ridden. It started immediately and I almost had to reach down and touch it to see if it was running. We rolled through some mellow single-track trails and it was noticeable that the front was lower, but the bike did not give me much of a stink bug feeling.

As we began to ride a little more aggressively, I was amazed at how smooth the power delivery was. It was linear with no gap that a two-stroke sometimes can have when it falls off the pipe and then has to build rpm. Sometimes I need a little adjustment period when going from a four-stroke to a two-stroke because of the different power delivery between them, but I did not need to do so with this engine. It had a light feeling, but the power was right there whenever you needed it.

The ergonomics were comfortable right from the get-go. The addition of the BGR Moto custom seat profile made me feel right at home. The bike’s large-capacity 3.2-gallon fuel tank was absolutely not noticeable when riding. Moving around on the slim chassis was very easy and the fit and finish of the bodywork left nothing to become hung up on.

As we rode more, I began to become aware of how the front wheel tracked. It was noticeable how it followed the ground in slower areas and rocky sections. This was also a huge advantage for cornering as the bike turned very well. As we got into some higher speed trails with more rollers, the shorter fork took some getting used to; it was not a valving problem, but more of a timing thing. Because the fork is shorter, when going through rollers, there was a slight delay before the front wheel got back to the ground. Keeping in mind this bike had been set up for hard enduro and single-track, I was not too concerned with that sensation.

What did impress me was the suspension action. The BGR Moto settings are just about spot-on for what their goal is. The front and rear seemed fairly well balanced. Normally, these types of enduro bikes come with suspension that has a very springy feeling and are in no way planted like a four-stroke. This bike had some of the springy feeling but was also planted. Bottoming resistance was good, and while I was able to bottom the fork a few times, it was under a load so that would be expected. Under the heaviest of load, I felt the shock was a little firmer than the fork and that could possibly be adjusted.

Riding the bike in some flowing single-track was a blast. The more planted feeling gave me confidence the bike was not going to lose traction and the torque of the engine allowed the rear wheel to hook up and not just spin. Whatever BGR Moto has done for the fuel injection and tuning, this bike ran great.
