Harley-Davidson introduced the KR in 1953 in response to the increase of competition from UK brands like Triumph or BSA after post WWII reduction in import duties. The technology found on the import off-road bikes elevated the entire section if they wanted to compete, and KR was developed by Harley-Davidson to compete in the Class C racing. Billed as an over the counter racer from Harley-Davidson,was initially used by racers to campaign around the United States. They were featured at many fairgrounds around the country. All were fitted with a four-speed transmission and many are still used in vintage dirt track racing events.
