Aric Almirola: "Unusual" Talladega hurt by difficult cars
Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola says that the NASCAR Cup series race at Talladega was “unusual” because the increased speeds are making the cars worse to drive on restrictor-plate tracks. NASCAR ended its minimum ride height rule for Daytona and Talladega to bring the superspeedways in line with other tracks, meaning early weekend speeds reached over 200mph.The restrictor plates, designed to limit horsepower and control cornering speeds, normally create pack racing.
NASCAR is back at Talladega on Sunday for the Geico 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway.
After pole qualifying on Saturday, Kevin Harvick will start in front with Kurt Busch and Martin Truex rounding out the top three positions. The results came following a NASCAR rule change in hopes of cutting speed after Jamie McMurray wrecked in Friday's practice while going an estimated 210 mph. The rule decreased the size of the restrictor plates to reduce horsepower and a few miles per hour.
